Is there some sort of magic for the "cleared at booking"? I've never had a flight clear at booking. I'm going SFO-HKG on Oct 22 2018 and only 2 business class seats have been sold and I'm on the waitlist for upgrade.

6. At booking.

Was R9 before and after booking, then went to R0 less than 8 hours after. I've noticed this a couple times now (for dates around Thanksgiving,) where a specific route goes R9 (R>0) for a short period of time before going back to R0

The magic is to pick a flight with R>0 at the time of booking.

Yeah I get that but it just seems you never run across those fare buckets or at lest I haven't been able to.

My SFO-HKG four days earlier cleared. The day of the week may play a role. Good luck.

That's why it's magic (Magic; noun. 1) Any art that invokes supernatural powers 2) An illusory feat)!

Well you could try enabling expert mode and looking for open upgrade inventory (R) prior to booking

Actually it's booked 4/60. But D3 Z0 P0. Normally I'd say it's going to clear, but UA clearly thinks that's going to be a high demand flight.

I've cleared SFO-HKG at booking well over a dozen times in the last few years.

This is why it's good to check daily if you're either booked or considering a particular flight.

I'm most surprised that EWR-SFO got cleared at booking...

They're flying a 764 on EWR-SFO too? Very interesting...
