Is there some sort of magic for the "cleared at booking"? I've never had a flight clear at booking. I'm going SFO-HKG on Oct 22 2018 and only 2 business class seats have been sold and I'm on the waitlist for upgrade.

1. SFO-FRA(-MAD)
2. Nov 20, 2018
3. W
4. Y-C
5. Booked Sept 11
6. At booking.
Was R9 before and after booking, then went to R0 less than 8 hours after. I've noticed this a couple times now (for dates around Thanksgiving,) where a specific route goes R9 (R>0) for a short period of time before going back to R0

The magic is to pick a flight with R>0 at the time of booking.

Well you could try enabling expert mode and looking for open upgrade inventory (R) prior to booking
Actually it's booked 4/60. But D3 Z0 P0. Normally I'd say it's going to clear, but UA clearly thinks that's going to be a high demand flight.
I've cleared SFO-HKG at booking well over a dozen times in the last few years.
This is why it's good to check daily if you're either booked or considering a particular flight.
