United's Long History Connecting Customers to the Pacific Islands
United's love affair with the Pacific islands started more than 70 years ago and continues today. It began in 1947 with United's first flight across the Pacific from San Francisco to Honolulu, making the Hawaiian Islands an easily accessible destination for tourism and business. Today, United offers more flights between the mainland and the Hawaiian Islands than any other U.S. carrier.

In 1968, United expanded its Pacific network linking the Hawaiian Islands, the Marshall Islands, Micronesia and Guam. Today, nearly half a century later, United's Island Hopper - Flight 155 - departs Guam in the morning and makes a series of five, one-hour flights to the islands of Chuuk, Pohnpei, Kosrae; Kwajalein and Majuro. In addition to the airline's popular Island Hopper service, United connects customers from Guam to other island destinations including Palau, Yap and the Philippines.

In 1986, United began nonstop service from its West Coast hubs in the U.S. to Sydney and Melbourne, Australia. Today, United is the largest U.S. carrier to serve Australia, offering the most seats to Sydney and Melbourne with its daily nonstop service from San Francisco and Los Angeles.Building its powerful Pacific network, last year United began nonstop service from San Francisco to Auckland, New Zealand, becoming the largest mainland U.S. carrier to serve the City of Sails.

Apparently the airport does not operate at night, per Bora Bora Airport (BOB) - Travel and Air Tahiti Airlines Flight Information
Typically the last flight out of Bora Bora Airport is around 7 pm so that after dark, island residents and resort guests are not disturbed by airplane noise.
and perhaps the need for water taxi service to/from the airport.

That doesn't surprise me. The arrival and departure flight path goes right over the Four Seasons and the St. Regis, and the boats going by create some noise and wakes. Also, the boat rides to/from the airport aren't aren't necessarily short (it's 15 minutes to the St. Regis, and that is one of the closer hotels to the airport) and there may be some visibility issues in the dark.

We looked into going straight to Bora Bora and ran into the same issue. We ended up spending a night in Papeete and then a couple of nights in Moorea first, and then flew from there to Bora Bora during the day.

Air Tahiti Charter will do a 9PM flight to Bora Bora, however i'm not sure if the St. Regis will still pick us up that late from the airport.

Still waiting on this...I have had no luck finding space. Not sure if they'll add any business savers, but seats are starting to disappear on the seat map and GPU space isn't even available.

Polaris from SFO to Tahiti

Flying in 'Polaris' this week. My booking won't let me book special meals for some reason but the Polaris phone line assured me that there is always a vegetarian entree option on the main menu I will be able to order from. I'm always a bit doubtful about these things, so if anyone has any experience or sample menus of the flights to and from Tahiti, I would be very grateful if they could share! Thank you.

I am not aware there is a separate menu for Tahiti flights, so looking on the main food threads would be good.

The common vegetarian item is ravioli with various non-meat contents. Sometimes cheese, sometimes pumpkin, sometimes other things.

(sorry if this was answered up thread, scanned and didn’t find it)

Flying BOB-PPT-SFO - when does checkin for the UA flight open at PPT (9:15pm departure)? Looking to get rid of bags before heading into town for a quick layover dinner before the SFO departure.

Just another long crappy UA flight in C on this route. And PPT is a disgrace to airports globally. Truly abysmal in every way possible. The only part of that airport worth a damn is the private terminal for the flights to The Brando.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m glad to see UA add Tahiti, but they should have built a lounge there or contracted one out. The airport doesn’t even have AC. Shockingly bad. And the paid lounge the FS setup there is a complete and utter joke. It’s a partially air conditioned nearly empty room with wicker couches. They didn’t even have water and it cost around $200 to use for a couple hours. Hence my honest commentary employing the word abysmal which the entire experience very much lives up to.

You can pay a few bucks and dump your bags pre-security as well if you want to go to the food trucks prior to United opening up.

What do you really expect at an airport like this? I haven’t been yet (will be there in June) but it sounds a lot like the Kauai airport.

Also, no Priority Pass?

Papeete, IME, is more humid than Kauai, and it did seem oppressive by comparison to Kauai, so it seems like some free access A/C spaces would be reasonable. The fans were poorly positioned and slower than the ones at BOB, so I understand the complaint.

We went to the Air Tahiti Nui lounge and it was truly poor, other than the A/C, and they do limit the number of Priority Pass admissions. In addition, the day we were there, the lounge opened 35 minutes late (the staff seemed really lackadaisical about the line of pax waiting) and there were a lot of truly upset Polaris customers standing in the oppressive heat upstairs.

I was wondering how quickly the lounge filled up.

Did you stay in there the entire time after getting in, or was it so bad you left?
What time did you get to the lounge and did you have to wait?

I've got 4 other people who will be cranky if they aren't waiting with AC, so if that means getting to the airport early so be it.

The lounge never was "full" but they only had 3 staff working, so maybe that caused them to limit access. I didn't actually count how many pax were there but I estimate that it was only about 25, which is kind of odd because the J-cabin was completely booked (36 seats). The lounge would probably hold 60+ comfortably so I don't know exactly what causes them to limit capacity. My wife noticed that some Priority Pass holders that had initially been turned away were later allowed in.

We arrived at around 1830 and were told by some others in line that had visited several times before that they should've opened at 1900, but they didn't end-up opening until 1935 (our departure time was 2115). By that time, everybody was very cranky because the upstairs area is warmer than downstairs because there is virtually no air circulation. Many pax got on their phones, complaining to someone to no avail and, while many lounge staff walked past all of us multiple times as they stocked/staffed the lounge, no one ever got an answer as to when they would open.

There is no chance that I would leave the wonderful A/C in that place once I got in, even though it is probably the worst lounge that I have ever been in. The WiFi is unusable and, while the desktops work fine and quickly, they have a funny keyboard with misplaced letters from the QWERTY keyboard that I am used to. The food is abysmal, everything I tried was just awful. I assume the limited selection of alcohol was OK but, since I don't drink, I just don't know. A/C is the only reason to go.
