United's Long History Connecting Customers to the Pacific Islands
United's love affair with the Pacific islands started more than 70 years ago and continues today. It began in 1947 with United's first flight across the Pacific from San Francisco to Honolulu, making the Hawaiian Islands an easily accessible destination for tourism and business. Today, United offers more flights between the mainland and the Hawaiian Islands than any other U.S. carrier.

In 1968, United expanded its Pacific network linking the Hawaiian Islands, the Marshall Islands, Micronesia and Guam. Today, nearly half a century later, United's Island Hopper - Flight 155 - departs Guam in the morning and makes a series of five, one-hour flights to the islands of Chuuk, Pohnpei, Kosrae; Kwajalein and Majuro. In addition to the airline's popular Island Hopper service, United connects customers from Guam to other island destinations including Palau, Yap and the Philippines.

In 1986, United began nonstop service from its West Coast hubs in the U.S. to Sydney and Melbourne, Australia. Today, United is the largest U.S. carrier to serve Australia, offering the most seats to Sydney and Melbourne with its daily nonstop service from San Francisco and Los Angeles.Building its powerful Pacific network, last year United began nonstop service from San Francisco to Auckland, New Zealand, becoming the largest mainland U.S. carrier to serve the City of Sails.

United and United Express operate more than 250 daily flights between San Francisco and 90 destinations throughout North America, Latin America, Asia, Europe and the Caribbean. Beginning in June 2018, United will start nonstop seasonal summer service between San Francisco and Zurich.

If buying that n a single ticket, MCT on that (VT - UA. D:I) is 2 hours. I'd only consider doing it on a single ticket. When I had that issue, we arrived in the afternoon and went downtown for dinner by the pier. It was nice and we weren't rushed. (We were also on two separate tickets).

Is the flight you are on a 787-9? If so, chances are decent in my opinion. When I flew to PPT in September, I was the only 1K on the flight and no GS either.

No it's a 787-8 and I've been shut out several times... I would only attempt it from purchasing a PP fare then the UG.... just have a look at the current NOW situation and it is off season for a few more weeks...

Thanks! As it worked out, cleared to PP on outbound pretty much immediately and Polaris on the return. Honestly totally fine with PP for an 8 hour day flight if I don't clear, it's not as nice as Polaris but for a day flight totally comfortable; I was more concerned with lie flat for the return

Question, which version of the 787 are you flying on for each leg? UA is mixing in the 787-8 and 787-9. The real difference between the two is the number of Polaris seats upfront as the 787-8 actually has more seats in the rear than the 787-9. If you do remain in PP for SFO-PPT, get a window seat on the starboard side of the aircraft. This view, taking from 1L, is why:

That connection time is plenty. When we did it, at roughly the same arrival time as yours, the airport was dead, and hardly anyone was in the premier queue.

According to the OP, both legs are on 787-9s. UA is mixing in 787-8s and 787-9s until the end of May I believe and then going all 787-9 in June/July/August before swapping in the 787-8 again. Incidentally, when looking at the dates I flew IAD-SFO-PPT-SFO-IAD last September, this coming September its operated by a 787-8.

You'll be fine. I had no line at the 1K check-in at PPT at around 6 pm. Security took longer than the whole check-in process even though I was on two separate reservations which took some time. But this is plenty of time here. Enjoy BOB! Didn't make it there in September as I stayed in Tahiti and Mo'orea. Also, FYI, the lounge is rather spartan with the soft product and food, comparable to a domestic US lounge, other than the self serve booze, which I had plenty of Tahitian rum that enabled five hours of solid sleep flying back to SFO.
