The Deep Dish on United's Exciting New Menu Items
Chicago-style deep dish pizza tops a list of delicious new offerings on board July 1
Colorado-based New Belgium Voodoo Ranger IPA takes off September 1

CHICAGO, June 29, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- United is adding something new for every taste with several new in-flight menu items available for purchase. Starting July 1, customers can experience a slice of Chicago with personal-size Uno's deep-dish pizza, and United will expand its onboard beer list to include New Belgium Voodoo Ranger IPA beginning September 1.

United customers will also have more Choice Menu options from which to choose, including Bistro on Board items like the breakfast egg white flatbread; Uno's deep dish spinach, cheese and garlic pizza; Thai-style Chicken Ciabatta sandwich; and the new, Mediterranean-inspired Protein Box, featuring a healthy mix of almonds, sesame sticks, roasted red pepper hummus and cracked wheat salad.

United has also refreshed some of its popular Snack Shop items, including the Tapas Box, a customer favorite. The updated Tapas Box includes flatbread crackers, almonds, bruschetta, cheese spread, hummus, olive crackers, dried fruit, ginger mints and a sea salt dark chocolate caramel.

"As part of our ongoing commitment to putting our customers at the center of everything we do, we are always listening to their feedback when it comes to food choices on board our flights," said Jimmy Samartzis, United's vice president of Catering Operations. "Our customers told us they are craving pizza, and we heard them. We are excited to offer two new options – a breakfast egg white flatbread served on morning flights and deep dish pizza from hometown favorite Uno's on afternoon and evening flights."

All new menu items and refreshed snackboxes will be available for purchase on flights within the U.S. with a scheduled flight time of more than 3.5 hours and on all international flights from the U.S. to Canada, Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean. Snack Shop items including the Tapas, Classic, Select and Ben Flyin Kid's snackboxes are available on all flights over 1.5 hours within North America, including the Caribbean and select Latin American cities, Singapore and Australia. Learn more about where you can get your snacks here.

United's popular cheeseburger and fries ($11.99) will remain on the menu. View United's refreshed Choice Menu with the new items here.

I give United a pat for changing it up and serving something new.
thanks for what sounds like a fairly positive report. Hoping to try this on my flight from SFO on Tues.

ANd my report...had the pizza on SFO-CVG yesterday afternoon.

Pretty much what I expected...not bad at all for Y class on a US legacy. Could have been hotter, but definitely cooked all the way through and pretty much similar to the frozen variety. Given Chicago deep dish and the fact it has 4 cheeses, fairly heavy, but also means it doesn't need to be bigger than the fairly small size it is. I'd definitely order again as a meal on a UA. As an aside, I asked the FA if she'd heard how it was - she said it was her first afternoon flight that they had it (and I was in row 8), but she said that the egg white flatbread they serve on the breakfast flights are quite good as well, looks like it could be from the menu description...though don't know when I might be in a morning flight that long to test it.

I'll test the egg white flatbread in 10 days or so and get back to you. My usual thing is to eat a "real" breakfast at the airport and something light on the plane, but I'll take a risk and check it out.

I had the "Thai style chicken Ciabatta" on Tuesday. Pretty terrible in my opinion. No idea what makes it "Thai." The roll was rock hard.

Based on what the FA was telling the row in front of me on EWR-DEN yesterday, the pizza burger combo is replacing cheese plate and wraps.

If so, I'm not sure I like this change. I'm not against pizza or burgers, but having the somewhat lighter options was nice...

Eating one for the team...

For all who require photographic evidence, here is what I was served seated in 21C on my 07/10/17 LAX-IAD 752 flight.

Eater commentary: Crust was not crispy in the least and a bit too bready for my taste. Didn't really notice the "garlic". And it didn't fill me up as my "lunch" - I ended up asking later in the flight for a cheeseburger (if one remained - and it did!) - 'tho no photos were taken of the 'burger.

One option, depending how gregarious you are, is to bring a mini-pac/ziploc bag of a handful of pepperoni and, assuming you get a pizza (preferably hot), pop the 'roni on top and close the lid - or go the back galley and ask if they'll put your pizza in the oven for a few minutes.

I sure hope that UA's rules don't allow for any outside food to go into their on-board ovens under any circumstances. The public health and security reasons for such a restriction should be obvious.

Rules aside, the ovens are probably the equivalent of a office break room microwave (as in never cleaned) so shoving a pizza back in the oven with some pepperoni added in the scheme of things really isn't any worse than what presently goes in there.

I don't know about where you work, but in my office break room, I'm pretty sure there aren't people trying to figure out what to put into the microwave that would ignite and destroy the building. Not so confident I could say that about the aircraft galley ovens.

That's why I don't want anything going in there that the flight kitchen hasn't vetted and the airline's security team hasn't inspected.

Always an item on my expense report

Seriously though, DL is in the same ballpark price wise. I recall them charging $8.99 for a Ballast Point Grapefruit Sculpin

No More Healthy Fresh Food Option

Not impressed with the new options. United used to be the leader for healthier in-flight choices.

The Thai Chicken Ciabatta is 95% bread, and as others have commented, nothing which justifies the "Thai" label. The deep-dish pizza is more or less a cheese bowl, and the burger is not for me.

I understand why United would choose to have one or two comfort food options, but all three does not make sense to me. American and Delta have pulled ahead of United, in that regard.
