Possibly, but you'd think CNN would get the boot over that before NYT. As would ESPN.com, for which nearly every article has auto-playing video...

I was wondering why I kept on being blocked for som well known news sites on my flight back from Asia. Though not as bad as losing all interact access two hours after leaving the U.S. On the way over. Thanks for sharing.

Perhaps these sites at one time or another published an OP ED pc not favorable to UA. let's face it, UA is up there at the top of the list when it comes to petty game playing with the dead weight they are forced to carry (customers of course). I'm still wondering why UA has not cried foul yet in the case of EK who offers WIFI for FREE on all flights (with the exception of about 6 aircraft that are not set up for that yet so they charge $1.00

Because UA offers a better wifi product in most cases. The EK A380s are using an older system which has woefully inadequate capacity for the number of passengers on board. Just because it is free doesn't mean it is a useful product.

I haven't tried EK's wifi... but if it's worse by and than UA's, that's saying something. I have had to refund something like 60% of my UA wifi purchases this year due to the performance being so poor; a few other cases, I managed to get an hour or two of good service out of a transcon flight and figured it was a wash.

If they were smart they would be blocking sites like aa.com and delta.com.

There are, essentially, three different types of satellite service available: L-band, Ku-band and Ka-band. The max capacity available increases from L to Ku to Ka while the per bit price decreases (this is a spectacular over-generalization but it is sufficient for this version of the explanation). At the same time L-band has a better global footprint while Ku trails a bit and Ka trails more significantly (though there will soon be global Ka thanks to a successful satellite launch last Friday). So, a Ka connection is typically capped around 25Mbit and a Ku is typically capped around 8Mbit and L is typically <1Mbit. Ek has L band on its A380s. It has the same Panasonic Ku on its 777s as UA has on most of its fleet.

Thumbs down Banned from United Club ?

OK,

Sitting in the United Club in Boston after a long day of meetings waiting for my flight back home to CLE. Thought I would check my lotto numbers to see if I won and I could rebook to Hawaii etc.. Low and behold this comes up on my iPhone. Anybody else ever encounter this ? You can't check lotto #'s at the U.C. ?

Yes - UA has decided that gambling and guns are off limits on their wifi network - but you can watch all the porn you want on UA's wifi as I had the unfortunate pleasure of sitting next to someone in the club who enjoyed streaming it on his laptop... I swear to goodness porn has become so common that it's like watching CNN to some people - I'm always amazed but not sure why any more....
