THIS IS A THREAD FOR WHICH ALL MP MEMBERS WILL BE ABLE TO RESPOND ...THANKS.
The goal of the survey is to benefit all of us.
This thread is to ask ALL MileagePlus members who read the MileagePlus Forum to please respond to this
short 3 question survey. It will only take a few minutes..

PLEASE PM YOUR MP FTer FRIENDS TO ASK THEM TO ALSO POST IN THIS SURVEY....THANKS.
The 3 questions are in Post #1

WIKI UPDATED FEBRUARY 24 (already over 275 posts)

PLEASE READ THIS WIKI AND POST #1 BEFORE RESPONDING TO THIS SURVEY. THANKS.

WE NEED YOUR INPUT....PLEASE TAKE PART.

IF YOU ARE ONE OF THOSE WHO HAS ALREADY RESPONDED, KINDLY CHECK YOUR POST TO MAKE SURE YOUR REASONS FOR MAINTAINING OR CHANGING YOUR STATUS LEVEL ARE CLEAR IN QUESTION #2. KINDLY EDIT, IF NEEDED. THIS IS TO HELP IN GATHERING OF DATA FOR THE SURVEY, TO BENEFIT US ALL. THANK YOU.

The data will be compiled and posted in this WIKI after approximately each 100 respondants during the year to keep it simple for someone (me) who has trouble figuring out where Boarding Line 1 is

DATA WILL BE UPDATED AT THE BOTTOM OF THE WIKI

UA monitors these threads. They will not release their statistics on MP membership changes, so let us work together to compile our own data.

PURPOSE OF SURVEY

The aim is to get a very large number of data points in the coming weeks/months to see percentages of those who dropped, maintained, or increased in status through their 2014 earnings activity for 2015 status in MP because of many reasons.

The survey asks persons to state their individual reasons for their 2014-15 activity for attaining a certain status level for 2015. The survey will determine in a objective, structured, measurable and efficient way, what were persons' experiences in flying on UA in 2014 in light of various changes in the MileagePlus program or other UA flying experiences that have affected the amount of flying they did on UA in 2014. This MAY have affected their Premier status. Kindly PM your UA FTer friends to ask them to post in this survey. Thanks.

The Feb. 1 changeover date is to include those persons who responded to a "Buy Up" offer in January to maintain their 2014 status.)

IF YOU RESPONDED TO A BUY UP OFFER AFTER FEB.1, PLEASE INDICATE THAT IN YOUR RESPONSE (UA's BUY UP OFFERS EXTENDED UNTIL 2/28.

. (Some persons have other reasons for changing their 2014 flying on UA other than complaints about UA or MileagePlus.... such as the amount of business travel changing).

It will take just a few minutes for you to respond. Data will be updated in this WIKI after every 100 responses. Please read Post #1 before responding to this survey. Thank you.

(There is a separate thread for 2015 in which a brief, 3 question survey is being taken in regards to persons' plans for 2015 for earning 2016 Premier status (and reducing, maintaining, or increasing the amount of your UA flying) in light of the new PQD requirements for 2016 and new policies regarding earning Reward Mileage, or your other unique reasons. Kindly expound on your 2015 plans for 2016 status in that thread. Thanks.)
HERE IS THE LINK TO THAT THREAD:
[2015] Version: What plans do you have in 2015 for earning 2016 Premier status?

DATA

I am working on the data for this thread and will post more information later. So far, I have counted 200 respondants through Post #204 (including those who reported for 2 persons). 46% have dropped in status from 2014 to 2015. 40 % have stayed the same. 14 % increased status.

The most noticable trend so far among FTers who have reported to this thread is that of the (92/200) 46% who reported dropping in status,
(53/92) 58% were 1K in 2014. Of that 58%, 50% dropped to Gold or Below.

Here is the 2015 status breakdown of the 200 persons so far reporting included in the survey statistics : GS 3%, 1K 35%, Platinum 19.5%, Gold 18%, Silver 12%, GM 12.5%.

No GS dropped below 1K. 6 GS dropped, replaced by 3 new ones.

16 Platinums dropped, replaced by 9 new ones. So there was a slight decrease in Platinums...combined with the number of 1Ks who dropped below Platinum, shows a trend of a smaller group that MIGHT eventually show up in the sizes of Boarding Group 1...(if the data from this survey would be interpreted to somehow signal a drop of MP members across the system...We can only speculate on this, as FT is a small percentage of the entire MP population, and not everyone on FT will respond to this thread. OF COURSE THERE ARE OTHER FACTORS THAT AFFECT THE SIZE OF BOARDING GROUP 1 AT TIMES... SUCH AS IRRROPS, SDCs, DEPARTURE CITY, ELITE HEAVY ROUTES, DESTINATION CITY, DAY OF WEEK, TIME OF DAY, etc.)

But it is interesting to see such a drop of 1Ks to be below Platinum who have reported so far in this thread.
************************************************** **************************************

REPEAT: There is a separate thread for 2015 in which a brief, 3 question survey is being taken in regards to persons' plans for 2015 for earning 2016 Premier status in light of the new PQD requirements for 2016 and new policies regarding earning Reward Mileage, or your other unique reasons. Kindly expound on your 2015 plans for 2016 status in that thread. Thanks.)
HERE IS THE LINK TO THAT THREAD:
[2015] Version: What plans do you have in 2015 for earning 2016 Premier status?

Many posters are providing excellent reasons why their status dropped, stayed the same, or increased from 2014 to 2015.

However, many posters are not providing any reasons.

IT WOULD BE VERY HELPFUL TO US ALL if future posters would expound in more detail for their reasons for their status as of the changeover date on Feb. 1, 2015...see examples in Post #1.

Please read Post #1 before posting in this thread. Thank you.

For those who have already posted their status, it will be very helpful to us all for you to go back to edit your posts to expound more clearly to give us all some better insights for your reasons for your status. In particular, for the 46% who dropped status from 2014 to 2015.... It would be very helpful to us all for you to expound on your reasons. This may help to see if any trends are being established (at least among those MP members who choose to post in this Forum... a small sample of all MP members). No significant trends for reasons have yet emerged in the early life of this survey.

It is possible that number is somewhat indicative of all MP members across the UA system, but it is unknown. UA certainly will not share their statistics with us. How representative are those who post in this FT Forum of the entire MP membership?....unknown...we can only speculate.

The more persons who take time to report in this thread, the greater number of data points we will have.

[IS UA's STRATEGY TO THIN THE RANKS OF PREMIERS AND HOPE MORE PERSONS WILL "BUY-UP" their upgrades rather than using CPUs, RPUs, and GPUs ? Or is UA thinking that more persons will now buy higher fares? Hard to know...there has been a lot of speculation in the past in the MileagePlus Forum about these possibilities.]

If these numbers are somewhat indicative of MP members across the UA system, then we ought to begin seeing some indications of this in the size of Boarding Group 1 in the coming weeks and months. If Boarding Group 1 seems to be shrinking, this may indicate a larger drop in 1Ks to Gold or below, and a drop from the ranks of Platinums. (OF COURSE SOME CITIES ARE VERY HEAVY 1Ks and Plats...but be observing...see if you notice any overall shrinking of sizes of Boarding Group 1,)

Most posters so far have been Premier members.

Some posters are providing excellent reasons why their status dropped, stayed the same, or increased.

However, many posters are not providing any reasons.

AGAIN...IT WOULD BE VERY HELPFUL TO US ALL if future posters would expound in more detail for the reasons for their status...see examples in Post #1. This will help to identify if any trends for reasons are emerging.

Thanks. I will update WIKI at some appropriate point when more data becomes available in the future.

(1) 2014 Gold > 2015 Gold (stayed the same)

Did the status you earned from 2013 for 2014 change from 2014 to 2015? (may indicate trends)

No; 2013 Gold > 2014 Gold > 2015 Gold.

(2) Lots of international travel, so I did not want to give up lounge & priority boarding access to build up status on another airline/carrier. Met it with regularly scheduled travel. PQD does not affect me. Added AS to my carrier list in 2014 & greatly enjoyed, so I may be moving there if the route plan works out.

(3) Nope. Everything went as I planned. I was able to run a few other flights through AS, which was nice as well.

(1) 2014 1K > 2015 1K

Did the status you earned from 2013 for 2014 change from 2014 to 2015? (may indicate trends)

No. 2003 1K > 2004 1K > 2005 1K > 2006 1K > 2007 1K > 2008 1K > 2009 1K > 2010 1K > 2011 1K > 2012 1K > 2012 1K > 2013 1K > 2014 1K

Sigh... Thinking about the early 'oughts reminds me of things like pillows and blankets and meals in Coach. Remember those?

I've maintained status because I like to travel, and maintaining elite status make the experience more pleasant. 1K status provides Economy Plus access, free award redemption/change/cancellation, free baggage, early boarding, the 1K line, lounge access on international trips, and (last but certainly not least) upgrades with CPUs, RPUs and GPUs.

My 2014 experience was pretty good. I got CPU upgrades on at least 30% of the domestic flights, the agents on the 1K phone line were as helpful as ever, and the flight crews provided consistently good service.

My biggest gripe was with the comfort of the regional jets on long routes such as Denver-Cleveland. I was careful to leave a scathing survey response for every one of those flights. The lack of R upgrade space is another sore point, as is the limitation of applying GPUs to W fares and higher. I'd pay for higher fares if R space were more readily available -- and I'd risk applying GPUs to low fares even if the upgrades didn't clear right away. But I won't spend extra money and risk an upgrade not clearing.

The only other carrier I flew in 2014 was Asiana on a First Class award. The soft product was far superior to United's First Class service, but the seats were old and less comfortable than the UA Global First seats.

(2) Consistent work travel within the U.S.; one international trip. If I'm lucky and keep working for the same company, I'll be able keep this up for the next decade until I reach 3MM / Lifetime 1K.

(3) Keeping this status should be straightforward if I continue to work as a traveling consultant. I haven't noticed much thinning of the herd when it comes to upgrades, which is the perk I care about the most. Either I get the upgrade, or I'm #23 on the wait list, or something in between. I am prepared to pay for buy-ups under the right circumstances, which is probably what UA wants me to do anyway.

2014-1K, 2015-1K

It wasn't difficult to attain 1K for 2015. However, to keep 1K I've been flying UA 2 or 3 times a year from DXB-USA (C fares upgraded to ON). I don't think I'll do this for 2016. you just get so much more from EK, especially on the 380 in F that I think after 24 years as a 1K, this may be my last.

**Note. Although I live in Dubai, my MP address is in the US so I'm not exempt from PQD. I may finally change it but I've been lazy (I have plenty of documentation so not worried UA would deny the address change)

1. 2014 -- 1K, 2015 -- Plat

2. Silver --> 1K --> 1K --> Plat. I've bounced between Silver and Gold for many years, but in 2013 I surged to 1K due to significantly increased international travel.

3. 1K --> Plat as of 2/1/2015

4. I'm primarily an international flier. Had to cancel a couple trips in 2014 which would have kept me at 1K.

5. Had to do a mileage run on 12/29 just to keep Platinum, or else I would've dropped all the way to Gold.

Going forward, I'll probably bounce between Plat and 1K, depending on the number of JAPAC trips I need to take.

(1) 2014 Gold --> 2015 Gold.

No change: 2013 Gold --> 2014 Gold --> 2015 Gold.

(2) I remain at gold this year 2015, because I tried to keep the same level of flying/spending in 2014 as 2013. As it turns out, I flew/spent a little more than 2013! This included two round trips from PHL-HNL, one of them being booked in F class. I had three US$250 vouchers that I received in 2013 for IRROPS, and that encouraged me to buy some higher class tickets so that I could get more PQM. Together with an overall desire to do more travelling and do some inexpensive weekend getaways (hello PHL-DFW, I'm talking to you!) this enabled me to inflate my PQM more than my 2013 level, but not enough to get me to Platinum (I ended up in 2014 with 65K PQM, the highest ever for me).

In 2014, I began to notice the shortcomings of United (same tedious F cabin meals, learning about United going revenue and increased PQD), but I was in "gotta fly United all the time" mode. Refusing to look at other airlines for travel. It was UA all day, all the time (except for an F cabin trip to HNL on US which was booked before US left *A). I didn't really have a basis to compare UA to other carriers (except for that US flight), because I hadn't flown other carriers recently in 2013 or 2014, so I guess I was complacent in staying with UA in 2014.

(3) I touched on some of the reasons why it was easy for me to keep (and in fact, increase) my activity with United. So it was easy for me to keep Gold, due to my two HNL RT flights, and my desire to do more "weekend getaway" mini revenue/mileage runs in 2014.

(1) 2014 1K > 2015 Platinum

(2) Reduced work travel and gave some segments to AA. It's tough hitting 120 segments and the 10 I gave to AA didn't help.

(3) Nope, was about 20 segments short of 1K this year.

Question 1: My status stayed the same from 2013-2014 to 2014-2015, but I've also been splitting my status:

2006-2007 NW Platinum
2007-2008 NW Platinum | US CP
2007-2008 DL Platinum | US CP
2008-2009 DL Platinum | US CP
2009-2010 DL Platinum | US Platinum | AF Club 2000
2010-2011 DL Platinum | US Platinum | AF Club 2000
2011-2012 DL Platinum | UA Premier Executive (matched) | AF Club 2000
2012-2013 DL Platinum | UA Premier 1K | AM Platino (matched)
2013-2014 UA Premier 1K | AM Platino | AS MVPG
2014-2015 UA Premier 1K | AF Club 2000

Question 2: My spend largely remained the same as I'm a predominately leisure traveler on UA, since the company that I work for requires me to use AF/KL or other carriers within in SkyTeam by extension. But, expounding on leisure travel, I tend to fly in discounted C (P fares, of which the P fare sale last year helped immensely) or pick routes that have R availability at time of booking to secure the upgrade.

Question 3: Nope, especially when UA had the P fare sale, which assisted in getting me the necessary PQDs...I just ran out of available weekends to travel though.

(1) If your status remained the same from 2014 to 2015 or changed on Feb, 1. 2015 (the status changeover date). (What is your status?)

2013 Gold
2014 Platinum
2015 1K

(2) What were the reasons your status changed, or remained the same on Feb. 1 ?... please expound in some detail FOR THE MOST RELEVANT TOP REASONS FOR YOU......

My steady increase in status had nothing to do with diverting travel from other airlines and had everything to do with simply having to travel more often for work. I live in SF (and before that, Houston) so United is pretty much my only decent option when you consider routings, frequency, etc. even if they do frustrate me.

(3) Did you have any particular difficulties in maintaining or increasing your 2014 status for 2015?

Not at all nor did I have any difficulties in exceeding my status. I think I hit 76,000 miles in 2014 and 127,000 miles in 2015. Again, that increase was solely due to more required business travel. I didn't have an issue hitting the PQD thresholds even though all of my travel is lowest available economy fare.

1. Status will remain the same in 2015 as in 2014. Premier Gold.

2. Status remained the same mostly because of loyalty to UA. Personal character flaw ( ;-) ). Seriously have had more issues with UA since the merger with CO than my previous 10+ years flying with CO. I have a pretty good understanding of UA website, route structure, etc. and didn't want to learn another carriers systems, quirks, etc. Not sure if they are any better or worst then any of the other legacy carriers in the US hence gave my money of another year.

3. Didn't appreciate how hard it was to meet the PQD amount. Took flights that I would not have because of the PQD requirement. Not happy about the increase for 2016.

Thanks for doing this.

I do a few transpacs/year and fly in paid C when I run out of GPUs. That + CC bonus did the job.

1k in 2014 Gold in 2015.

That beng said its MM Gold status. I would have had the miles at 53k but was 88.00 short of PQD. So had I not been MM Gold I guess I would have dropped to silver.

All of the above was leisure travel in 2014. Had I not been burning so many miles due to the partner redemption changes I would probably been Platinum as i would have paid for some of my TPACS.

1) Did the status you earned from 2013 for 2014 change from 2014 to 2015? (may indicate trends)

1K for 14+ years. No change this year

(2) UA best airline for USA & Asia routings for my work + leisure travel.
1k status helps in award bookings & some GPU/RPU/CPU situations [although lower probability than 3 years ago, still decent if can plan travel ahead & avoid peak flight times].
Irrops rebooking assistance also useful, but nowhere as good as 5+ years ago, and what GS status now provides.

(3) 2014 1K; 2015 1K.
Crossed 100k pqm mid-Feb, and plan 150k pqm by Feb 28 before mileage deval using several MR trips [with flexible work schedule] from LAX-BAH, EWR-HKG, on top of 2 biz trips to TPE.
Expect 2016 PQM & PQD to ratchet up ; my goal is unclear, depends if UA improves soft product & GPU/RPU certainty
