https://www.united.com/web/format/pd...f_Carriage.pdf

Carry-on Baggage must not exceed the Maximum Outside Linear Dimensions of 9 inches (22 cm) x 14 inches (35 cm) x 22 inches (56 cm), which includes its wheels and handles.

Personal items must not exceed 9 inches (22 cm) x 10 inches (25 cm) x 17 inches (43 cm), which includes any wheels and handles.

A personal item that exceeds these maximum linear dimensions but is not greater than 9 inches (22 cm) x 14 inches (35 cm) x 22 inches (56 cm) will be considered as Carry-on Baggage. Carry-on Baggage or personal items suspected of being oversized may require being placed into a sizing unit to determine acceptability. Carry-on Baggage that exceeds the Maximum Linear Dimensions allowed or that exceeds the Carry-on Free Baggage Allowance will be considered as Checked Baggage and is subject to Checked Baggage service charges.

If OP's question relates to basic economy restrictions, they don't actually stop you from using the overhead, they just won't let you carry-on a bag that exceeds the personal item dimenstions. I don't know how much play there is in the sizer, but 3.75 inches is a pretty significant overage.
Good point! I never actually checked those numbers.
I stand corrected :-)

It's still a good tip, just not sure it would clear the sizer as a "personal item."

Recommendation: If you do have a soft sided rolling briefcase that fits in UAXs RJ145s and 200s and it doesn't have a strap or the option to use a strap, take it to your shoe/luggage repair place and ask them to install/sew on support straps/rings so you can then carry it on. May help to bring an empty bag that has support straps/rings already installed as an example. My repair shop added them to my case for $15 - best investment ever.

lol in a truly ironic coincidence, the guy sitting next to me on a DL 739 tonight brought on some sort of wheeled laptop bag. He was the last passenger to board and tried to jam the thing under the seat. It totally did not fit. DL flight attendants (who IME typically let F pax get away with blatant rule violations), allowed him to leave it there nonetheless.

That's not what I said. We're talking about something with wheels on it, not a briefcase. In any event, I think you've forgotten that with a BE fare, you have to check-in at the counter and show them what you're carrying-on. That's where the most stringent enforcement happens.

So Rimowa has changed the names of their bags. Has anyone tried to get the Rimowa Cabin Essential, which is listed as 21.7 x 15.8 x 9.1 past the sizer? Looking to take advantage of the AMEX Rimowa offer

Sizing Carry on bags: 22 vs 23"

While investigating United's allowed size for carry on bags (stated max: 9 inches x 14 inches x 22 inches), I came across something online indicating that the metal frame boxes used to determine if bag is conforming are actually set for 23 inches long, rather than the 22 inches referenced in United's policy.
Can anyone confirm that?

First, I have not seen a sizer in quite some time.

But even if the sizer has in inch of forgiveness (I am NOT saying it is or does), you should plan on 22in max.

Yes, true but rarely see a sizer any more and have not seen an agent use a sizer in years -- well before COVID.

And in that time the market for carryon bags has changed dramatically, with the increased popularity of spinners, so it's now difficult to find two wheel bags at all, let alone reasonably priced bags that comply with United's size requirements and are reasonably priced. If anyone knows of any (other than the Rick Steves' bag), please let me know!

Indeed. The last time I remember even seeing a sizer was sometime in 2016 in SAN. I only remember it because there was a GA forcing folks to check carry-ons, who was just eyeballing it even though a sizer was within sight.

Ah, I found this article describing United's removal of the sizer boxes back in 2020:
https://www.sfgate.com/travel/articl...s-15045784.php
So I guess all the GA's now have calibrated eyes!
Now I'm not sure what to do about my carry-on that's just a little bit too big. I hate to buy yet another suitcase, but since we'll be arriving at LHR late at night, I don't really want to wait for a bag that had to be checked.

Baggage size dimensions

For the carry on (not personal item) if I have 48 linear inches and the requirement says 45 linear inches - how strict are they? I don't have a personal item but I maybe I will just buy a smaller bag to fit the dimensions and get a small personal item. Post can be deleted

It varies a lot. But depending on aircraft, you may not be able to fit it in the overhead without significantly inconveniencing other passengers. What are the full dimensions? If 1" each way it could work. But if all 3" are in one dimension, it probably will cause a problem.

If 45 means that 48 is okay, doesn't that mean that 52 is okay? If 52 is okay, why are they not allowing 56?

It is less than 1" each side so I thought I wouldn't have to rush to buy a bag (Also since I didn't have a personal item.) but I think I will go get a perfect fit from Macys before flight. Thanks
