A number of folks with award flights booked on CA (Air China) found their reservations cancelled. The only notification of cancellation appears to be an email in from UA written in chinese. UA reps confirmed that cancellations were made online and CA award space was no longer available. UA can rebook on other flights when award space is available.

It is plausible that a third party with access to PNR and pax name on the flight can fraudulently cancel an existing itinerary and book the reopened award seat.

Apologies up front to differ. Call it paranoia of someone holding on to 4 biz on Air China on 4 segments, Hotels booked in 4 cities... checking the Res.everyday expecting the worse and hoping UA IT will come through! !

Hello XXXXXXXXX,
We’re always glad to hear from 1K members like you. Thanks for writing.
Since your question is related to an existing reservation, please contact United Reservations at 1-800-United-1 (1-800-864-8331). From outside the U.S., visit www.united.com/worldwidecontacts for a list of country-specific contact numbers.
Did you ever find a way to have UA protect your reservations from nefarious cancellation?

My ticket was canceled in December 2013 a few days before my flight in early January 2014, I received a cancellation e-mail in Chinese.

After spending hours dealing with UA phone agents who were trying to convince me that I had canceled my reservation UA was finally able to put together some decent flight backs to the US.

The next day I logged into my account to look at my reservation and all the flights had dropped (might have been a SHARES issues). Instead of spending anymore time dealing with UA I went online and canceled my ticket. I then called AA and booked a flight on CX. It wasn't worth the stress, time-cost or the long-distance calls to have to deal with UA any longer.

I was in a fortunate position to make the alternative arrangement.

I got confirmation that UA has fixed the guest issue:

"We and have made changes for your protection. You must now sign into a MileagePlus account on United.com, to cancel an award reservation. MileagePlus members who call United to cancel award reservations must provide their account PIN"

They are now trying to see if they can get CA to reopen seats. Overall, very happy!!!!

Don't want to play the devil's advocate here, but there are still couple of further loopholes identified after this new enhancement rolled out at .bomb!

I have sent an email to UA Insider updating my findings (i.e., additional loopholes), and hopefully United will fix them soon.

Is this just for itins with CA flights? I don't see any change for my itins, none of which have CA flights.

Changed my award flight which had CA segment at the return flight to BR. Had to call to finalize the reservation and rep on that side have not heard about this problem. Are people in call centers aware of this matter right now or it is limited at this forum and some other folks at UA?

You always need to give PIN to apply a GPU over the phone.

I have burned through millions of miles on many airlines. UA is at real bad place now. If you don't have lot's of miles or the resources to file a court action to summon United into court, you may be SOL. I have a trip in Nov. using CA, I am thinking of filing a court action for my last trip so I don't get messed up again on the next one. If the current award is under court supervision, United can't argue.

This is all stupid.

Yes it is. It just isn't as effective as using multiple layers of security.

To find this thread I actually had to go to the 3rd page. I hope this slowdown is a good sign that people are getting taken care of like I was, and that the new measures taken by UA will help stem these cancellations!
