They seem to be committed to an overall expansion policy, LAX and elsewhere. Seems kind of an out of the blue idea. What benefit would it have to them to downsize?

Highly unlikely but I'm hoping for LAX PEK. I think more realistically, it's FRA or HKG

Would they fly a route that their partner (Lufthansa) already flies to (FRA)?

Sure, if the demand is there. UA and LH both fly to FRA out of ORD. UA and ANA both fly to NRT out of ORD. Just a couple examples.

I flew LAX-HKG-LAX several times when UA operated it (and a much bigger LAX operation) around 2004 or 2005 IIRC. Never seen 747s more empty. One time my wife and I took trip to DPS with our next-door neighbors (via HKG and SIN on UA) and neighbors (no status) cleared mileage upgrades to the UD and we four has the entire UD to ourselves.

CX has multiple frequencies coupled with the AA 77W, cant imagine it would be easy for UA to win premium cabin marketshare on LAX-HKG. Not like UA has much more LAX feed than it did 12-13 years ago.

They are redoing all the gate layouts to squeeze more parking spots in. For example gate 72 just finished and is now 72A and 72B same with 75. 74 is being refurbished now. Hopefully these additional gates help.

LAX-HKG-LAX was my favorite route for many years and I had been vocal in the past to support restarting the service.

The reality was UA never really made any money on this route. PMUA had tried restarted it a couple of times and had to pulled it because the loads were embarrassingly low. CX has cornered the market and now AA has started it service since UA last flew this route.

I remember flying it the last time UA serviced this route, the plane was so empty.

Using a 787 may be a viable option....

When UA downsized LAX after the merger, it forced me to change a bit of my flying. PDX-LAX was done away with which meant I needed to double connect for some of the routes that were only available out of LAX. Now that that route is coming back, I'm very happy.

As someone in (unrelated) SFO thread mentioned, it will probably be LAX-GDL or something, on UAX This is just a pessimist in me speaking, FWIW.
