So does every other airline, due to DOT regulations, not because they are trying to help the consumer!

I don't understand why miles would not be awarded for these flights.

Miles are awarded based on fare CLASS, not on fare PAID.

Not true. Where is that in the CoC?

Hi all,

I got an update from a senior insider at United. They still haven't made up their mind but are leaning towards some sort of compromise. It's sounding like the mileage for these tickets won't be there though. Sadly, despite how much I harassed the guy, he didn't give me much more than that there would be a compromise and that I would be "happy" but not "very happy"

Also he let me know that last night United sent out an email to its employees regarding the situation. The email stated that if customers called in to ask if the tickets would be honored to tell customers that United would do what's best for both the Customer and the Airline.

I really hope that we do get mileage on these tickets because it would be a huge FTC section 5 violation not to let me get my PQM and RDM on my 15x RT BOS-HNL trips... but sadly it doesn't seem that United is going to grant mileage :-/.

Regards,

mbwmbw
Really? Complaining about not getting mileage for a free flight?

I'm sure its not a coincidence the airlines that complained and tried to fight it were the ones that did not already offer the benefit, mainly WN and NK.

Note that the booking class that appears on your ticket may differ from the booking class that the operating airline uses to determine flight miles earned.

Yes. The $ price of the flight has no bearing on the mileage earned. Miles are awarded based on fare class.

Is it his problem that a K fare priced out at $0.00? No.

This is a hard and painful lesson to United that their IT organization is an absolute sh**storm. I can only hope that someone or a group of someones got fired yesterday.

At my company, they would have been shown the door within minutes.

Nice try. Booking airline and operating airline are the same here.

If you'd like to review the CoC and try to find an applicable tidbit, feel free.

Earning MP miles has nothing to do with CoC. Only MP T&C matters here.

There are two exception entries that can prevent you from earning miles.

You're sending people to the wrong place - this is all they need:

MileagePlus membership and benefits, including the Premier Program, are offered at the discretion of United Airlines and its affiliates, and United has the right to terminate the Program and/or the Premier Program or to change the Program Rules, regulations, benefits, conditions of participation or mileage levels, in whole or in part, at any time, with or without notice, even though changes may affect the value of the mileage or certificates already accumulated.

First paragraph in Mileage Plus Program Rules.

#22 may be the issue

Air mileage will not be credited for award travel, including tickets issued as MileagePlus awards and tickets purchased using a combination of miles and money; on travel industry or reduced tickets; consolidation tickets; or on tickets which are issued subject to any accumulation of MileagePlus credit. In addition, some fares or tickets, including those sold over the Internet, at United’s discretion, may be excluded from eligibility for mileage accrual.

Good point.

Trying to claim that UA has no basis for being able to refuse to award miles or honor the tickets is ridiculous. This is purely a customer goodwill problem to solve.
