So you start with a lower # of remaining seats for upgrades. You can see this by checking the seat maps at T-7 days - many seats already gone in F.

Then you take the huge # of GS in SF, not to mention 1Ks, and the result is that every hub-hub flight has dozens of elites in the cattle car. Your only real shot is flying at a real offpeak time or to a 2nd-tier destination.
And location : people are willing to burn miles and GPUs/RPUs on transcons to/from SF (which they won't waste on 2 hour hops through IAH), which makes it worse.

Case in point : i'm sked on EWR-SFO tomorrow (fri) early evening on 73G .... 11 out of 12 F seats filled, but not a single person listed under the "upgraded" section on UA.com.

As a Gold member I hardly every get CPUs, however, that changed for me this week. I was upgraded on the following flights, all at least 24-48 hours prior to departure on a G fare:

Tuesday- ORD-IAH- 7:35AM
Thursday- IAH-LAS- 7:30AM
Saturday- LAS-ORD- 8:30AM

I couldn't believe the first two, the last one wasn't too surprising. FWIW, perhaps the CPUs are improving.

DEN-SFO-DEN, self and SO - both 1Ks, did not clear on 757 in both directions. Outbound ended up 5 & 6 on the list. Return is TBD, but booked full with only 5 people showing "upgraded" on the list. 21 people paid/used instruments for SFO-DEN? Dang...

It's funny...when I don't get upgraded on an A319 I think, "well, it was an A319, those never clear", but when I don't even come close on a 757, I feel like a total loser On my trip last month I got upgraded on a A319 (as a Silver) and missed the 757...go figure.

I have a CPU question about my flight tomorrow evening (UA 276 ORD-FLL) The mobile app shows 7 FC seats taken on the A320 plus 4 blocked. Why would those seats be blocked on a domestic flight?

What do you mean by "blocked"? I'm not seeing any blocked seats in either of the senses that that word is sometimes used.

Be sure to report back what happens to you. Hopefully this S isn't endemic.

Will do. I'm getting really annoyed and concerned about $misek's increasingly desperate money grabs.

many times if Y is over booked, 4seat are block / taken out of inventory to habdle the overbooking. How the overbooking is handled -- many possibilities CPU/TOD/HOD/Up-ups/ ....

Grrr... Back to 5/8 as PG out of IAH. Got passed up last night, ended #1 on UG list. Literally at the 11th hour someone got assigned the last seat in BF. Don't know much about the UG process so I couldn't assume that it was a TOD or employee? Had 7A with the middle seat empty and my fill of drinks & food already at the Heniken bar/lounge.

Thanks for the info WineCountry UA. I checked in 25 min ago at T-24 (7:50 PM CST) and got my upgrade notification at 8:10 PM. The app now shows 6 booked in FC (including me) and 4 still blocked of the 12 FC seats overall. Coach shows full so the oversold theory is quite plausible and the remaining 2 seats could easily be tomorrow's TOD upgrades. Edited to mention I scored the upgrade on a K(!) fare.

Happened to me last night too. First showed +9 blocked on the app. Then "full" but seat map was wide open and only 2 had checked in. Ticket agent confirmed oversell theory. All CPUs were processed including my companion and flight even took off with 1 empty F seat.

They are not improving. Becoming more obvious that upgrades happen for TODs or Y or B. The rest is luck. You can no longer rely on status for an UG while 1K's sit in C on SFO-DEN or at least 5 1K's sitting in C on LAX-IAH, just unheard of prior to merger. There are a lot of conversations out there but what airline really has UGs for FF with a reliabie percentage?
