Official size as per Rule 23.B.2, Baggage, Contract of Carriage:
https://www.united.com/web/format/pd...f_Carriage.pdf

Carry-on Baggage must not exceed the Maximum Outside Linear Dimensions of 9 inches (22 cm) x 14 inches (35 cm) x 22 inches (56 cm), which includes its wheels and handles.

Personal items must not exceed 9 inches (22 cm) x 10 inches (25 cm) x 17 inches (43 cm), which includes any wheels and handles.

A personal item that exceeds these maximum linear dimensions but is not greater than 9 inches (22 cm) x 14 inches (35 cm) x 22 inches (56 cm) will be considered as Carry-on Baggage. Carry-on Baggage or personal items suspected of being oversized may require being placed into a sizing unit to determine acceptability. Carry-on Baggage that exceeds the Maximum Linear Dimensions allowed or that exceeds the Carry-on Free Baggage Allowance will be considered as Checked Baggage and is subject to Checked Baggage service charges.
Under the 2013 contract of carriage, which is still valid for various tickets outstanding, the cabin baggage rule states a maximum of 45 linear inches combined for the LHW dimensions with no given side exceeding 22 inches. For such tickets, the cabin bag sizers are not lawfully applicable if the LHW combined linear inches don't exceed 45 linear inches and no side of the bag exceeds 22 inches. In other words for tickets issued last year, some bags allowed under the contract of carriage don't fit in the sizer without sticking out on at least one side.

I saw my first observation of the "strict enforcement". It was at PHL last night. Mainline plane heading to ORD. Extra staff on hand to do nothing but check carry on bag sizes.

Seemed to focus on rollerboards. Stood right at the podium and observed everyone boarding. Anything not fitting in the sizer was tagged as checked luggage. To my novice eye, seemed many of them would have fit into the overhead wheel first...as in, this wasn't helping anyone.

It was not my flight, so I didn't notice it until they were on group 3, so no data on how they handled GS/First Class/1K passengers.

My later flight (on United Express) was "normal". No one seemed interested in checking anything. No extra staff, anyway.

My understanding is the bags were being checked to the carousel. I'm not positive, though.

You weren't on SFO-EWR yesterday. I saw people ignore not just the GA, but the FAs as they walked on the plane (I was in 1B). The FAs begged a bunch of them to check, but no. And these were big bags. I think I counted 10 bags that had to be walked back (eventually). Delayed us at least 10 minutes.

I get that people think it's a revenue grab. I just think it's people who simply do not listen that ruin it for all, and this is UA's way of trying to cope with it.

Not where they were checked to - but did they tag the bag at the door then take it from passengers and hold it aside, or tell the passengers to leave it at the end of the jetway?

If the latter, it's easy to just remove the tag before boarding and carry the bag on - if the former, then the bag is pretty much gone unless the passenger can somehow grab it back while boarding without being detected.

For mainline aircraft, any checked item that is not a stroller r a wheelchair is picked up at baggage claim.

I have yet to see any change in carry-on/boarding process after flights thru DEN, CVG, EWR, IAD and DXB. That to me is almost worse. Random enforcement means that I'll get lazy and let my roll on get a little paunchy and I'll be able to get it into the sizer, but not out.

The one I witnessed, they were holding at the podium, not letting them onto the jetway. No easy way to game the system.

I have no problem with forcing LARGE bags (that don't fit in the bin wheels first) into checked baggage. Forcing bags that fit appropriately into the bin to checked baggage is just stupid. Waste of everyone's time and just ticks people off.

But we have been through this many times on this thread

No enforcement at all on either side of an SFO-SJD I just returned from. At SFO we walked up to the gate after boarding started and GA put gate check tags on our bags even as group 3 had just finished. When we got down the jetway there was a much more friendly GA running the show that told us to bring them on. Sure enough, there were a half dozen completely empty bins and space above row 7 for our bags. At that point it seemed like they completely abandoned gate checking. Even as boarding was nearly complete people were walking on with some truly mind-blowingly large "carry-on" rollerboards. Feeling pretty lucky to have went with an International-sized Tumi Alpha a year ago. Looking at switching to a backpack that fits under the seat for short trips.

This was the same at SFO. They held them at the podium.

This is interesting. Presumably, it's the only way to make this new enforcement actually work, but I'd think it would create a whole new problem of getting bags from there down the jetway. I wonder if they're using carts or something for that.

No announcement on using sizer at Orlando today. They even have one at the gate.

FA has been making announcements to only put one bag in overhead.

OK, professor, answer me this, is this deadheading or not?:

My friend flies out-of-uniform, with a guaranteed seat, paid, to position for his pilot duties.

And, if a seat mate tells me he is a deadheading pilot, why wouldn't I believe him?
How am I to know if he is a non-rev or a commuter?

The pilot could be deadheading or traveling on company business (e.g., traveling for training).

And, if a seat mate tells me he is a deadheading pilot, why wouldn't I believe him?
It's up to you whether to believe a pilot or not. He may have just been giving you a convenient answer to terminate the subject. I have no idea.

I will just tell you that deadheading happens far, far less often than it did in the past. It is less common because the airline crew scheduling has gotten better.

As to your DL friend, I suspect he is commuting--not deadheading.

How am I to know if he is a non-rev or a commuter?
Why would you care? If you want to know, you could ask.
