Seriously, this has to be aimed at the power user. That's US. To United, we are the problem. We are the people that they're thinking have just enough information to be really dangerous, and they're thinking maybe if they cut us off, we'll have less to hassle them about. We can't micro-manage our itineraries (and from United's perspective, that's exactly what we're doing... micro-managing things in a way they incorrectly see as abusive while we see as trying to get United to give us the benefits they say we have).

Yup^

I agree. My guess is that the CS folks are tired of taking the "why hasn't my upgrade cleared" calls....

But now they're getting calls along the lines of "before I book, is there any upgrade space available". This is exactly what an agent told me this morning-they found out when we did (late Friday) and he also said that one out of every 3 to 4 of his calls today had been about upgrade avilability

Why do they need to create a paradigm when the resurrected The Twilight Zone ;)

Fare Classes for this announcment:

...: >9
BS : >9
OK : <0

I'm not happy with this. Don't delete the feature until you have the fix in place.

Another idea instead of having Expert Mode, just re-name it Elite Mode and give it to all your Elite Customers ;).

Or they could call it Overentitled Elite Mode and give it to all of their Overentitled Elite Customers. Oh wait--they're already sticking it to us. ;)

I hate to say it but I have to side with United here if there's leeches out there making money off information that was freely provided by United and it was being manipulated by its' own customers as well. On one hand you have the UA Customers who are given this information and trying to take advantage of the system by gaming for Upgrades, SDCs, and et cetera and then on the other hand you have companies like KVS and EF taking advantage of this and distributing this data for a cost when it's United who is paying for this distribution of data and getting nothing in return.

While I do appreciate free tools such as WATT, it's clear United is trying to control the revenue environment by trimming the costs that it does not have to burden itself with. It still sucks as an 1K when I want to search for flights with R available.

UA could offer the same features and services KVS/EF offer, actually even better once since they have more information - they choose not to.
UA could fix their broken waitlist clearing so these other tools don't give you an advantage for jumping the queue - they choose not to.

It is scripting the browsing of the United site, including the advanced search and then checking the box to look for upgrade seats and such. So long as that functionality remains odds are that KVS will be able to script/browse it.

Thanks, sbm12.

"Expert Mode" Changes

This is the most asinine move ever. I would not put it past them to start charging for the ability to see "paid expert mode".

Not likely. Remember this airline is run by CO executives, the same ones who made the decision to simply hang up on you during heavy irrops activities rather than put you on hold, or god forbid, staff up when they knew a hurricane, snow storm or other calamity was headed their way.

Being customer focused clearly is not hard coded into the COdbaUA DNA. The position they seem to take is the Self Loading Cargo is a necessary evil.

Why on earth would the company remove that info? Because people MAY be confused? Why have any info at all? That is important data for the people that really need it. Another misstep in a chain for a company that I have had no problems with even during the changeover. Don't chase away your customers.

Just got this on e-mail.

Today United Airlines has decided to remove award and upgrade class inventory from various channels, affecting ExpertFlyer. As such, United will be removed from the list of airlines in the Award & Upgrade search tool until further notice. In addition, all Active Flight Alerts for United award or upgrade class codes will be put into the Expired state. Should the award and upgrade data become available at a later date, we will again activate those Flight Alerts.

A first for FT!

This has to be a first for FlyTalk in the United forum. A HOT topic with a torrent of reads/posts where essentially 100% of the members are in agreement! I have not seen anyone saying this is a good move, and only 2 posters have tried to defend UA's motives/thinking. Has there ever been this much unanimity on any issue that is this hot?

Come on, UA. Surely this warrants rethinking this change. Or does 100% alignment and passion across your very top customer base not matter to you?

When you consider that the changes to the 1MM part of the MP program prompted a thread with 269,615 views and 4,609 replies and no response by UA, I doubt the passion about this change will have any impact.

Your mixing up 2 seperate issues. If I was the president of UA (or any airline), my goal would be to give away as few upgrades as psbl (any upgrades! Instrument, op up, etc). That's their job & I have no problem with that. But as long as they have space in R/O class available, then it's just another stupid move by UA hiding that info from us.w Why shouldn't we be able to see where we can use our upgrades? But your argument that they just want to sell more seats in C or F makes THEIR argument for them.

The current mgmnt team obviously wants to get rid of as many upgrades as psbl. I applaude them for that lofty goal. The problem is instead of doing this by enhancing service & increasing the marketing budget so more people buy seats in F or C, they want their cake and to eat it to. They are going about this goal in a sneaky, dishonest way & cutting service, catering, marketing which is just driving FUll fare pax away. Jeff is looking at his whole job as a Harvard Thesis project & has no clue he's running this airline right into the ground (figuratively & soon, literally w all these cuts)

It bugs me that people have to pay money for this. Here's a captcha'd version of the same thing:

Unanimity is for one simple reason - its all about sitting in the front cabin without paying a premium. All about getting upgrades and awards. Everyone wants something for nothing or something for less - that is why there is so much agreement. While there are other instances for wanting to know fare availability, those most can live with or live around, but I bet you 90 percent of utilization of this tool relates in one way or another to sitting in the front without paying a front fare - or am I wrong?

Awesome awesome awesome. Any chance you can open source this? I'm sure plenty of us (myself included) would be more than happy to host mirrors.
