To make it even more confusing, they updated the United font to the one very similar to the Frienship's (though note the slight difference in the "U" in "United", no curly thing). This removed the Shield logo, which UA stopped using around 1968 or 1969.

Then the Friendship livery aka Stars and Bars came in 1971, and only last for 3 years. It was 1974 when Saul Bass was hired to modernize the brand and make it more consistent. The airline also wanted a new corporate symbol, since they stopped using the shield and were only using the "UNITED" script as a logo. This is when we got the Tulip.

It's not brand new - that plane's been around a few years. A bit of nostalgia for the "golden age" of airline travel.

Some people enjoy seeing planes painted in the historical liveries. The old UA scheme is great. And some of the CO 60's schemes were quite cool, such as the golden jet.

Old thread! I saw this bird while on the moving walkway towards the 70s and 80s gates at SFO this afternoon. Didn't snap a picture because I didn't want to miss spending as much time as possible on the 77W

Saw it leaving the gate at DCA on it's way to ORD. I've seen it flying above DCA and ORD several times but this is the first time I saw it on the ground and could get a picture. It could've been my first time on it if I'd gotten out of my meeting earlier.
Update: Caught up to it at ORD; it was leaving it's gate as we were arriving. Fun to get to see it twice.
