I've never seen the pilot's do it but anyone who frequently sits in F has seen the FA's putting water bottles into their bags. It's never been an issue before since pasengers weren't being told there was no more water left.

I do have to say, I have seen this pretty frequently recently. Also, I see them open and drink directly out of the bottles.

I would guess they don't cater out of SLC, not uncommon to not cater at a non hub. In those cases they stock the plane for departure and return. I had a not to pleasant return from SLC once where the plane was somehow disconnected from electric overnight and we were told that everything including soda and water were all frozen, and there would be no service. They did tell us before we boarded at least.
Still, if I worked for UA, I would have served tomorrows water and went and bought a few water bottles at the airport and tried to expense it in the name of customer service, but the way United runs things now, that would probably get a co-worker fired.

So I was going on a trip WAS - SLC to catch some decent snow and brought my wife which still nurses our infant son.
Thinking to enhance her comfort I got her F class seat expecting a bit of a better treatment then in Y.
Dinner was served (barely edible) and water was replenished 4-5 times. Midway through the flight she was informed that F class was out of water rations, and that they needed the rest of the water for the return trip (which was not until the next day).
How is this possible. It is hard to imagine that plans carry RT catering for 2K miles distance, the cost of fuel alone would prohibitive.
Truly disappointing experience

If they actually ran out of water, they could have gotten it from E.
And there's NO WAY that they would have said that they wanted to save the water for the return trip.
I can't believe that people are swallowing it without question.

I would find it hard to deny food or water to a mom with a baby, old person, someone who was obviously not feeling well. Usually an employee finds an out like, "well, I don't think there's any more, but hold on I'll check" and then they come up with something. I think that sometimes the FAs get tired of passengers who constantly ask for things, and sometimes they just must view all of us as a pain in the butt and they just reflexively say "no" to any requests after a certain point. They shouldn't do that, but some do.

I've never heard of WAS airport, but I gather it refers to Washington, D.C. area airports, and so I gather this was an IAD/SLC flight. That's an astonishing distance, practically a full TCON, to plan to cater once for both directions. Was the plane fueled only in IAD too?
