Have to stay vigilant! I don't mind UNITED selling F, I just want in on the lowball offers.

Agree on staying vigilant. After that experience, I keep checking on mobile app before the flight leaves. The upgrade offer was $300+ from booking up until a F was filled a couple days before the flight. Then suddenly a couple hours before the flight, space opens and they cut the upgrade offer in half.

Gold here:
Route: CUN-SFO
Fare class: T
Date of travel: 5/12
Price: $59 at check-in
Accept: Nope. $59 for a 5.5 hour flight was tempting, but the front of the plane was very empty at OLCI, so I took a gamble and eventually got the last seat on a CPU at the gate (I was the only one upgraded from the standby list).

As a UA Silver T-21:
SEA-LAX on a 739 (tomorrow 5/13) w/ 18/20 first seats occupied (at least 2 TODs already accepted or last-minute fares, as the cleared list didn't change and 2 fewer seats than at T-24)
Ticket on N class, $79 buy-up offered, which was not accepted
This was much less than a previous offer of $179 on 2/17 for SFO-SEA on a 320

From Reservations Page:
EWR-SJU
Original Fare: S/W
Upgrade Cost: $7663.00 / $7463.00
*Special price for upgrading both segments: $360.00 (save $14,766 buy upgrading your entire trip) <-- yes it literally says this.
Purchased upgrades for $360, both booked into P.
From what I could tell, this was $40 less than if I have chosen the P fare at original booking.

Imagine buying the $7k upgrade and not getting the PQD's

Not sure if this qualifies as a TOD, certainly a HOD, but here it is:
My wife (no status) traveling on her own reservation, IAH to GRU (UA 979), T Fare. Offered ~ $850 USD to upgrade to BF. Because we were traveling on a tight budget, declined the offer. Offer was seen at UA mobile app.
Surprising thing was, I was traveling on the same flight same date but a different reservation. Identical fare and fare class - no offer to upgrade presented.

June 11 LAX-MSY $139 for upgrade
For no-status friend, on cheapest one way on 11 June, ($160 ai), offered at purchase yesterday:
E+ for approx $70 - 80 (declined)
F for $139 (accepted)
Original fare: $160
Cabin Upgrade (A Fare) - an extra $139
If an AA gold (25 k miles status) wanted to upgrade, it would take 4 e-500's, at a cost of $35 each if purchased at the gate and there's not much chance that a gold would ever get the upgrade. For UA flyers, w/ no status, you can buy your way in F on booking...
Another friend on an award, COS-iah-MSY, was offered E+, approx $42 to IAH and $32 to MSY. This person had purchased E+ before (for a TATL).
Think this is dynamic pricing - cheap $139 upgrade to F for a 1666 mile flight for a no status flyer but a supercharged E+ price for one who had bought E+ in the past.

In March I flew IAH-MSY and it was laughable. I could buy up to F for $50, buy Premier access for $40 or E+ for $35, or something stupid like that. I didn't take any of the offers because its a 1 hr flight and I didn't plan on checking a bag, but the F was the only one of value. Also it was a 9 am flight so I didn't plan on pounding little bottles of Jack Daniels. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

I always try to think about these TOD/HOD situations from the other way around.
That is, on a short EWR-LHR flight if someone offered me $800 CASH in my hand for moving from a BF seat to a decent E+ seat, would I take it? I have to think I probably would.
I think there is a tendency for people to want to change what they already have.
