ORD-FRA, J --> F for $829. Dumb since they only have 4 booked in F and no one on the upgrade list. If it was closer to $500, I'd bite.

Last weekend, CUN -> ORD
they mention over the local PA system, they were selling first class upgrades for $99. When I finally got to talk with someone, they said he made a mistake that it was actually $179 for the upgrade. 3 seats available.

Is it possible for paid upgrades on mileage fare?
Thought you seasoned travelers could help me with a question... are paid upgrades at check-in available if I booked with miles? Or is buy up only avail on paid fares?

Yes, but these offers are only made online. You will likely see one during check-in for ~$829 but no guarantees and no dice if the computer doesn't spit it out.

If you don't see an offer at check-in, it has been reported that if you call UA up and ask for Web Support specifically within T-24, they can often "see" and process upgrade offers (ex. $829) that "should" appear (i.e. the inventory is there). Might be worth a shot if you're keen to sit up front.
