MCT for EWR (2012)

https://www.newarkairport.com/at-airport/connecting-flights

United Airlines operates an "air side" shuttle bus between Terminals A and C from 4:00AM to 12:00AM (midnight). In addition, United also operates a shuttle bus connecting Terminals A and C to terminal B (pier 3, used by Star Alliance carriers) from 1:00PM to 11:00PM, but not in the opposite direction (shuttle does not board at Terminal B). The shuttle bus is available at gate A28 and C70 as illustrated in the image above. The shuttle drops off passengers at the terminal B through the service entry, that requires walking up 2 flights of stairs - there is no elevator. Only the front bus doors will open for alighting at terminal B.This service is free and you will not have to go through TSA security again. Please note this shuttle is operated at the sole responsibility of United Airlines and is subject to modification at their discretion.

Bump for 2018. Is a 45min connection doable, assuming the inbound arrives on time? What are the A-C shuttle's hours of operation and how often does it run?

First question is going from where to where? If you are going domestic to international, that's not enough time. Likewise, if you are doing international to domestic that is not enough time. If you are doing domestic to domestic, it's short and you would have to wish that your flight is on time and that there are flights to your destination leaving after your flight with seats available.

Thanks - it would be domestic to domestic. I am in seat 1A on the inbound ERJ145. All one ticket so I presume UA will rebook me if I miss the connection.

The problem is that UA will rebook you in the first flight that there is an empty seat so it depends on how popular is your final destination. How many flights after yours are there for your final destination? Any chance you can book an earlier flight to EWR?

The buses between Terminals A to C work during the normal times of operations of the airport. I don't know about the frequency but it must be about every ten minutes (that's the time I waited the one time I had to connect from A to C but then I had like two hours between my flights).

Understood. I suppose I'll have to accept this risk.

Another concern is the EWR terminal maps on united.com have been updated (compared to what is shown above in this thread) and appear to indicate 2 stops in Terminal B on the way to Terminal C. Does this add appreciable time?

I think I saw a sign saying the buses ran every 5 minutes.

There is a Terminal A <-> C express bus that connects the two without any stops.

The bus stations at both terminals are staffed, so they'll probably direct you to the right bus once you tell them which terminal you're heading to.

If you assume the inbound arrives on time, it's doable but still likely stressful.

However, I would never assume that the inbound would arrive on time. The airspace above NYC is some of the most congested in the world, and United Express flights are the first to be delayed. At a minimum, I'd check on the on-time percentage for the flight, keeping in mind that "on-time" in airline parlance is "no more than 14 minutes late." 14 minutes late and your stress level has doubled or tripled.

Will you have a carry-on bag? The couple of extra minutes while you wait for it to be unloaded could be pivotal.

Long story short, I'd only book this connection if I didn't have any particular need to get to my destination. (Even if there's a seat on the next flight, it could easily be an E- middle...)

EWR Layover on United

Booked a trip to Osaka for a sweet deal.

I am flying out of YYZ so customs will be done there prior to flying out.

A little worried about a 1hr20min layover in EWR terminal A. Have to head to terminal C for a flight to Tokyo. Will that be enough time? Do I have to recheck my bags or are they going straight to Tokyo (where I'm assuming I have to recheck my bags there since I will then be flying on ANA to Osaka from there).

Any suggestions/ recommendations for making the connection?

If your connection is on time, you will be in good shape

no bag re-check. There is a bus inside the secure area that will bring you from A to C. 1h20 is not very comfortable, but likely doable. YYZ-EWR is a route that will get affected by EWR weather routinely. If the weather is fine then 1h20 should be plenty. Should it look like YYZ-EWR is running very late you can ask the UA staff at YYZ to re-route you on AC --> NH. They are quite used to having re-route pax who are looking at a misconnect at EWR

Are you on one itinerary? Two? Three?
If one, then bags will be checked through to final destination.
On arrival at Terminal A, walk to gate 28 and take the airside shuttle bus to Terminal C

If two or more, then this is a highly problematic travel plan.

United forced a change of routing for a flight in November and gave me 1hr10min layover in EWR before a one a day flight to HKG. I was not comfortable with that so I managed to change it.

In your case, since that's what you purchased, your options are to SDC (Same Day Change) to the earlier flight out of YYZ or if you see a change in the schedule of your flight that shortens the layover in EWR call United to put you on the earlier flight out of YYZ.

OP - You have used the term "layover" leaving several wondering whether you are connecting at EWR or transferring. Are you on one ticket or two (or more) tickets?

Sorry for the confusion. It is all under one itinerary.

YYZ - EWR - NRT - ITM

It is the first flight of the day out of YYZ so I suppose if there are any delays I can ask the United staff to put me on air Canada on a YYZ to HND to ITM route.

Thanks for your help everyone. February is a bit iffy with the weather so I do realize the risk with delays.
