MCT for EWR (2012)

https://www.newarkairport.com/at-airport/connecting-flights

United Airlines operates an "air side" shuttle bus between Terminals A and C from 4:00AM to 12:00AM (midnight). In addition, United also operates a shuttle bus connecting Terminals A and C to terminal B (pier 3, used by Star Alliance carriers) from 1:00PM to 11:00PM, but not in the opposite direction (shuttle does not board at Terminal B). The shuttle bus is available at gate A28 and C70 as illustrated in the image above. The shuttle drops off passengers at the terminal B through the service entry, that requires walking up 2 flights of stairs - there is no elevator. Only the front bus doors will open for alighting at terminal B.This service is free and you will not have to go through TSA security again. Please note this shuttle is operated at the sole responsibility of United Airlines and is subject to modification at their discretion.

As far as I've understood it, I can use the APC kiosks as a faster way to get through Customs. I'm a Dutch national btw travelling for the second time on this passport/ESTA combo. Also I'm travelling with a carry-on and personal item only, so no need to recheck any bags. I have a 2h10m connection so I'm not worried to much about that.

sorry I was confused on APC(Automated passport control) I use Global Entry as I’m a US citizen, so I can’t comment on the APC in the customs and immigration area. I thought you were referring to the kiosk by United where you could print out boarding passes, make changes to your flight etc. sorry for the confusion

Nah, all good. All these abbreviations can sometimes confuse a lot of people haha. Anyways yeah about the APC's, I guess I'll just see it when I get there. Thanks for the help.

I appreciate that, but it did happen to be sold out in my fare class when I was booking, and more importantly, I have trouble getting through super-long travel days (I would normally break the trip overnight in Europe, but it was much less expensive to route through EWR) - I think if I can get on the 6:14 departure that lands at DCA before 8 pm I can just about pull through, but a 10 pm arrival would be too much and at that point I'd rather overnight at Newark.

No lounge access at EWR unless you have Star Alliance Gold status.

It would surprise absolutely nobody if the 6:14 PM schedule departure actually lands at DCA at 10 PM. Or later.

Thank you for the prompt reply.

I can use the Priority Pass for lounge access, which one would you recommend in EWR?

Also, an interesting point of comparison -- I had an AA award flying business class on QR, connecting at ATL to AA.
I could use the AA lounge in ATL.
Similarly, about a year ago, I flew CX first class (award ticket) into ORD, with a separate AA ticket in economy for ORD-MIA -- and I could use the AA lounge in ORD.
(On both occasions, it was my son (who is top tier in both AA and DL programs, and who used miles for the award) who told me about the rules.)

This may be of some help Priority Pass lounges at Newark (EWR)
Priority Pass options are the Airport Lounges forum

The various alliances have different rules, in Star Alliance, lounges are based on departure flight.

Note if you had arrived on an UA operated flight, UA allows its Business Class customers UC access on arrival. So there is patchwork of lounge access rules

Understood - in fact, it's partly the possibility that the 8:33 pm can be similarly delayed so as to arrive past midnight (as happened in the last week) that makes me especially interested in the 6:14, particularly as a last minute SDC (when I'm at the airport anyway and there are slightly fewer variables at play).

Hence my question - if my plan is to SDC to it right after taking my bags through customs at Terminal B, how far before its departure is a "safe" time to do it and still expect to make it to the gate at the A concourse in time?

I'm looking at an award from YVR to BOS via EWR. YVR-EWR is on AC (so I believe terminal A1) and EWR-BOS is on UA (should be terminal C). Is a 1:36 layover too tight to consider? We're in J inbound, so we'll be off the plane quickly.

Not too tight. You are pre-cleared coming into EWR from YVR, correct? So no immigration worries.
Even less tight if you have pre-check and/or clear.

You will need to exit airside for the transfer to Terminal C.

I have gone from B to C airside in about 15 minutes using CLEAR and Pre. I imagine it would be similar for going A1 to C, assuming you do CBP preclearance at YVR. Without CLEAR, I think it may have been about 5-10 minutes extra.

Yes, pre-clear and pre-check. Thanks.

I'm doing YOW-EWR-SJU all on United/ExpressJet. All one ticket. There's a 45 minute layover. We preclear here in Ottawa so I was envisioning step off the flight from Ottawa, walk a couple of gates over and join the queue boarding the plane to SJU. In the past I've done that in places like Chicago, so I wasn't worried. My flight is on Jan 29.

While doing the prep for how to make the connection efficiently I have learned that I'll be arriving in A, leaving from C and my gate at C is likely the furthest from the drop-off point for the transfer bus.

Worse, the on-time rate for that flight is 40% and the average delay is over 60 minutes based on the last 60 days of that flight.

I phoned this morning to ask to be moved to the previous flight (11.5 hours earlier therefore a 12 hour layover) and was told no problem, cough up more than the cost of the original ticket. Uhhmm, no.

I guess my question is why would they sell me this ticket in the first place? If we assume 10 minutes from wheels down to me walking off the plane (we have front row) and 15 minutes to walk to the transfer bus and transfer to C, then 10 minutes (according the Newark Website) to walk to my gate, that adds up to 35 minutes. Wouldn't the doors be closed by then? If this was a mistake on United's part, then why won't they let me change to the earlier flight at no charge?

We are flying United First (on the second leg, first plane is single cabin.) but that doesn't make anything move faster in the airport.

I'm preparing mentally for a misconnect so we'll have to overnight in Newark, and physically for our checked bags not to make it to the other plane and show up a day later. If the delay is on United's part do they pay for the hotel? Again, I can't stress enough they sold me this ticket and they refuse to correct the problem at no charge.

We are cruising on Feb 1 and the next port of call is 12 days later so that's why I've booked such an early arrival in San Juan. I feel like I've done my part to maximize me being in the right place at the right time.

The MCT (Minimum Connection Time) for A-to-C connection is 40 minutes, so it was not a "mistake" by United to sell the ticket since it is a legal connection. That doesn't mean it's a feasible connection most of the time since the YOW-EWR flight appears to have persistent delay issues. The gate closes 15 minutes before departure, so you'll have 30 minutes to do the A-to-C transfer and walk to your C gate. From the bus gate to the gates furthest away (the C130s gates) is probably more than 10 minutes unless you're willing to run. The taxi time between the YOW-EWR flight touching down and arriving at the gate is included in the planned arrival time, so the taxi time (that you estimate at 10 minutes) doesn't eat into the 45 minutes between flights.
