United Airlines operates an "air side" shuttle bus between Terminals A and C from 4:00AM to 12:00AM (midnight). In addition, United also operates a shuttle bus connecting Terminals A and C to terminal B (pier 3, used by Star Alliance carriers) from 1:00PM to 11:00PM, but not in the opposite direction (shuttle does not board at Terminal B). The shuttle bus is available at gate A28 and C70 as illustrated in the image above. The shuttle drops off passengers at the terminal B through the service entry, that requires walking up 2 flights of stairs - there is no elevator. Only the front bus doors will open for alighting at terminal B.This service is free and you will not have to go through TSA security again. Please note this shuttle is operated at the sole responsibility of United Airlines and is subject to modification at their discretion.

Does anyone know the MCT for DOM-INTL at EWR? Inbound on UA outbound on TP.

It would be great if we could just paste that GDS readout in the wiki here...

Question for those who know EWR well.
In March 2022 my family of 4 will be arriving CPT - EWR with most likely only hand luggage but possibly a checked bag or two. We all have global entry. The CPT - EWR arrives at 5:45AM on a Friday.
I need to book us an EWR - CLT as CLT is home. Our options are:
  • 6:30AM EWR - CLT on AA (outside of minimum connection time)
  • 8:15AM EWR - CLT on AA
  • 8:20AM EWR - CLT on UA
Assuming price was the same how much easier is it to take the 8:20AM EWR - CLT on UA vs. the 8:15AM EWR - CLT on AA? I am guessing either way we would have to clear TSA security. A benefit of UA is that if we do have checked bags we could check them all the way to CLT from CPT despite being on a separate ticket (although its kind of moot since we have to collect checked bags to go through immigration anyway). Is AA that much farther of a walk/bus/airtrain ride vs. taking the UA connection?

Separate tickets!
On a single ticket, 2 hours would be my minimum.

On separate tickets, if second is UA and checked thru, the bag recheck will be easy -- just after you exit immigration, there is a bag recheck. If second ticket is AA, you will need to lug the bags to the AA terminal, and do a normal checkin

Back to separate tickets, as you are doing a domestic connection, adds some modest risk that most would suggest adding extra buffer for delays. While likely 2 hours is enough, what would the Plan B options be -- UA will be more accommodating but when are the next flights out for each carrier?

A benefit of UA is that if we do have checked bags we could check them all the way to CLT from CPT despite being on a separate ticket (although its kind of moot since we have to collect checked bags to go through immigration anyway). Is AA that much farther of a walk/bus/airtrain ride vs. taking the UA connection?
Either way you will have to clear customs, recheck bags if any (generally just drop ff) and reclear security. I'd have no problem with either the UA or AA option as you should have more than enough time for the AA checkin cutoff. Given the 5 minute difference in the UA and AA flights I'd likely go with the UA option -- unless you really want AA. That'll give you more options if you misconnect. You may find an OTA will sell you the UA->AA option for a reasonable sum (ie not pushing it to a full Y fare). I'd also note that if the flight gets in early you might be able to switch to the earlier UA flight if you book the later UA one.

Are you seeing single ticket prices that are much higher for this trip? I'd check with some OTAs because some of those do pretty well with combining things creatively. Expedia used to be pretty good at doing that.

You will most likely arrive in Terminal B.

AA is in Terminal A, and UA (mostly) operates out of Terminal C, so the AirTrain time difference between the two is moot. I would go with whichever carrier has more frequency to CLT, in the event inbound flight from CPT arrives late.

Personally, I would go with AA. 6:30am might be tight, but 8:15am should be more than doable.

Yea - the different connection lgistics are likely to be a wash here. I'd not let that drive the decision. I would NOT book a 5:45am arrival and a 6:30am departure. As noted, that is below the MCT for a single ticket. There's a reason for that.

Without an AA bag tag, will the OP be able to drop there bag with AA at the recheck location. As they would be on an separate AA ticket.

Thanks for all the responses!
It sounds like its a wash going to terminal A or terminal C timewise.
We are on an ANA award ticket so I can't add the AA flight EWR - CLT in, must buy it separate.
I think now I need to figure out with what status AA will soft landing me to from Executive Platinum. If i still have decent status with them come March 2022 - may book with them to enjoy upgrade chances and easier standby to the earlier flight if make it.

Yea - there is a wrinkle in that. I'm nt sure AA has a counter in the recheck area and if so would it be able to handle such bags. But the OP on this did say they were likely to have hand luggage only.

Given the number of daily flights between CLT and EWR, one could wait until closer-in before booking the "positioning" flight. I do this on my end all the time, also accommodations.

That said, barring some major events, the flight schedule between CPT and EWR should be solid.

This thought just occurred to me. Would UA be better than AA all other things equal given we will have Polaris Lounge access and presumably the UA flights would be closer to the more favorable Polaris lounges? My (guess!) is AA would require a farther transit from lounge to gate. Your thoughts?

Both are currently closed.

Assuming they'd reopen at the time of your flight, it goes without saying the Polaris lounge is the better of the two. That said, in terms of proximity, AA utilizes one of three small concourses by Terminal A, so any AA gate and the lounge would be close to each other. The proximity between the Polaris lounge and the UA gate would likely require a longer walk. All that said, EWR is not a big airport (despite the volume it handle) in terms of footprint.

With still 10 months to go on the position flight between EWR and CLT, I would let things play out before making a final decision. Would one or both lounge(s) be open then? How much time to enjoy the lounge after clearing immigration, customs, and landside transfer? Plenty of daily flights between EWR and CLT to choose from, especially next year.
