United Airlines operates an "air side" shuttle bus between Terminals A and C from 4:00AM to 12:00AM (midnight). In addition, United also operates a shuttle bus connecting Terminals A and C to terminal B (pier 3, used by Star Alliance carriers) from 1:00PM to 11:00PM, but not in the opposite direction (shuttle does not board at Terminal B). The shuttle bus is available at gate A28 and C70 as illustrated in the image above. According to ExpertFlyer, the MCT at EWR for UA-UA, D-D is 35 minutes if there's no terminal change or 40 minutes for A->C. In no case is 29 minutes allowed.

No earlier flights out of YUL and No later flights EWR-RSW. Looks like 2 stopper or switch over to ORD which is probably the only worst place to connect in January than EWR... ugh. Departure is late January, so I'll wait a bit in case the schedule flops back to a better connection.

Terminal A is actually three separate security zones. AC and UA (Express) are both in Terminal A but different security zones and the UA shuttle only services their own gates/zone.

So am I to understand that if I land at terminal A from an AC flight, I need to clear security before transferring to a UA fight, even in the A terminal. But if I land from UA in Terminal A, I can use the shuttle to transfer to the C Terminal...

If you arrive at Terminal A with a United Express flight, you would park at concourse A2 where the inter-terminal shuttle departs.
If you arrive at Terminal A with an Air Canada flight, you would park at concourse A1 where there the United inter-terminal shuttle does not stop at. You must go landside and reclear security if connecting to a UA flight.
By the way, currently, concourse A2 in EWR is closed and all United and United Express flights depart from/arrive at Terminal C.

Well, the drama continues... Need to find an alternate flight from FCO to STL, as LH has cancelled our FRA-DEN leg. Still showing the FCO-FRA and DEN-STL legs. Is 2:25 a reasonable I->D connect time in EWR? 2 people, Global Entry and checked bags, traveling late October. Thanks in advance!

Well, the drama continues... Need to find an alternate flight from FCO to STL, as LH has cancelled our FRA-DEN leg. Still showing the FCO-FRA and DEN-STL legs. Is 2:25 a reasonable I->D connect time in EWR? 2 people, Global Entry and checked bags, traveling late October. Thanks in advance!
There are a lot of gateway airports to get yourself to STL. With the trip months away, I wouldn't worry too much about it. Just plan accordingly.
