You can pay in Canadian dollars if you apply on paper. So right now you actually get a 25% discount for filing manually.
I applied online on the 8th, since I already have GE (and my information changed minimally) I'm hoping for a quick turnaround. |

I'll also have some bridge tolls to account for as I'm going over to Canada for the interview. |

$50 CAD is $37.46 USD right now... then there's postage (call it $38). I guess it's a question of what's more worthwhile to you, several weeks of processing or $12 over the course of something that will be valid for 5-6 years (5 years + days to next birthday).

The Canadian part of the interview took a few minutes longer since they explained all the goofy things they don't allow through the Nexus line, and because I mentioned I might be traveling to Canada for business. (As soon as you mention the B word to CBSA, they get all worked up toward Americans). However, he didn't block my approval since I said (truthfully) that I was aware of work permit requirements and didn't have any pending work in process that might require a permit. |

I applied online in January, got my conditional approval in about 10 days, and just had my interview Monday (I could have done it sooner by looking around various processing centers) and am waiting for the card itself. I also had Global Entry. The US "interview" took about 30 seconds. It was just the guy saying I had been approved for Nexus and asking me if I had been using Global Entry. I said I hadn't, so he showed me how to use it at a land crossing and assured me I could use the Nexus line to get back into the US even without Nexus.

Thanks for the perspective. I'm hoping for conditional approval before I travel to Canada in early April (make the interview on the day of arrival). I'm hoping the fact that I'm making an appointment for NEXUS on the same day that I'm applying for a work permit at the point of entry doesn't cause any concern for the Canadian officials (I'm either going to get the work permit and have the interview or not...)
I think as long as you are upfront about being in the process of obtaining a work permit and understand the rules, you should be OK. They will likely point out that once you get the permit, you'll need to return to a enrollment center (no appointment needed) to get it added to your account. In theory you could arrive at the airport get it taken care of there. I'd suggest going through the regular line at your first arrival after getting the work permit. |

Manual Paper application received at NEXUS Feb 29.
Entered into their system Mar 7 ; customs agent told me this on the phone and gave me my SSID # Mar 8. Conditional Approval Mar 10 on GOES site. Great turnaround I don't think interview date will be this fast. |

Where are you looking to have the interview? Slots fill up quickly in popular places like Toronto, though you can sometimes get last-minute cancellations. I have a lot of airline points and decided to turn it into a quick trip up to Niagara Falls (which is about a 30 minute drive from the Ft. Erie location, just across the border from Buffalo).

Yeah, if I'm fortunate enough to have it on the day of my permit, I should either have the work permit in hand before I make it to the interview (having been granted it) or not make it to the interview at all (not getting the work permit would mean being denied entrance into Canada).

Sure, except $50 usd is $66 to $70 Can. As GOES only uses US$, a paper application=a few beers while one waits.
Given my circumstances I don't regret it, but if you were applying for NEXUS new (especially North of the border), I'd understand why you might mail an application. |
Well that was quick.

The non-refundable processing fee for NEXUS is CAN$50 or US$50 per applicant aged 18 and over. Please send a certified cheque or money order payable to the Receiver General for Canada. Membership is valid for five years. Children under the age of 18 must complete a separate application but there is no fee to do so. |
Canadians pays in Canadian dollars , Americans pay in American dollars. With a paper application.
This is nothing new, special baggage fees to the Airlines are also country specific currency. A bicycle for example is $50USD, or $50 CAD or €50 or £50 depending on where you depart |
