Back in the 1960s, Eastern Airlines used to offer a First Class service called Famous Restaurant Flights. This menu is from a Philadelphia to San Juan flight featuring cuisine from Philadelphia's Old Original Bookbinder's Restaurant. Imagine having settled into your plush First Class seat aboard an Eastern DC-8-61 and, after having gratefully accepted a welcome aboard cocktail, are presented with this menu for the three hour and twenty minute flight. Life aloft was much nicer back then...

Great for such a short flight but the food from restaurants idea lives still today (or still a few weeks ago).

When it comes to premium class services, not many people think of World Airways. As an historically supplemental carrier, its DC-10-30s were originally set in all-economy with a butt-numbing 345 seats configured 3-4-3. However, shortly after deregulation World commenced scheduled services and reconfigured its DC-10s with a very nice forward cabin branded as "Executive One" Business Class. This cabin featured six across First Class standard seating that included a table for four in the center of the cabin . Additionally, the meal service was on par with what some airlines were offering in First Class. Let's check out the service on this afternoon's flight between London Gatwick and Baltimore in the spring of 1981...

Your Choice of Entrees

in its natural juices. For the perfect accompaniment, try our mild horseradish sauce

FILLET OF SOLE MEUNIERE
Fresh fillets of sole gently sauteed 'til golden, then season with lemon butter sauce
sprinkled with freshly chopped parsley

CHICKEN PORTUGAISE
A boneless breast of chicken lightly sauteed with shallots, and finished in a
flavorful sauce of white wine, brandy and fresh sliced mushrooms

Garden Fresh Vegetables
Small Parsley Potatoes

*

That’s a pretty good offering for World Airways. About 40 years ago I knew a World Airways flight attendant who raved about the Black Forest Torte, and there I saw it on the menu you posted. Thank you for the memory.

Did World suspect all charter ops?

That's awesome, thank you for sharing! Too bad they don't have years and class, although I imagine many of these pre-date "business class" and are simply the "class above coach", whatever the particular airline called it.

If you click "more details" it drops down and shows the year (at least on the menus I checked out).

Awesome website! Thanks DELee!!!
