Bottles in luggage
I am going over to see my girlfriend in Washington and as was thinking of taking over some true British fayre with me..Newcastle Brown Ale!
As I would be taking the bottles with me would these pass the security at LHR or if I am forced to put them in the hold will they nicely explode all over my clean clothes?
A bit of a daft question really but have never had to take bottles of beer on a flight before so it is not so stupid!

Having seen bags fall off the conveyor belt, and tire tracks on my suitcase (run over by a luggage cart), nothing breakable is guaranteed to survive. Odds are good that nothing will break but why is it worth carrying that beer? Newcastle Brown Ale is readily obtainable in the US for a cheap price. At least bring something special if you are going to that much trouble (their brown ale is superb but too easy to get). As for carrying it onboard in hand luggage, usually that is allowed but not always so you may have to check it.

I once claimed my large suitcase off the Southwest carousel at LAX and it had a gooey brown "something" on it. When I wiped it off with a paper towel I could tell the "goo" was Tia Maria or some similar liqueur.
Obviously, someone else with checked luggage had put the bottle in their bag and it broke. Fortunately, my suitcase was hardshell with a good seal, so no damage to my clothing. But I hate to think what happened to the person's clothing in the "broken bottle suitcase." I also wonder how many other passengers with softside luggage had their cases stained and/or clothing ruined. Please don't put glass bottles in checked luggage.

I have brought bottles of wine in my carry on (just a few weeks ago) and that was no problem. I have packed wine in my luggage (in plastic bags, cushioned with cardboard) and that was no problem.
You should be fine either way

Also I didnt realise that it was so readily available in the US.
I will take on board (pardon the pun) the idea of not putting bottles in the hold. I just wasn't sure if bottles in carry-ons would class as some kind of weapon. I have seen the damage whacking someone round the face with a bottle can do.

I havetravelled several times with beer bottles. It is usually OK to have them in your carry-on - preferable as you can protect it from being tossed around.
If you check it I would recommend doing the following. wrap once with bubble wrap or a cloth then put the wrapped bottle in a big ziplock bag then put the zipock bag between a sweater or towel in your luggage.
This has worked fine for me a couple of times.
About Newcastle in the US - readily available on tap & bottled. not sure if it contract brewed - if so - they probably do it in Cananada - so it will still qualify as an import.
A great internet forum(of which I am also a member for all things beer related is www.ratebeer.com.
