My advice is to become "new school" on ATM's....you'd benefit on this trip because 1) you get the best conversion rate, and 2)I didn't pay any ATM fees in AMS on my card.

Needless to say, when I was in Europe in February, I didn't use my ATM card, and still saved money exchanging the cash I carried over what my bank would have charged.

To stay under your banks $4.00 fee you can exchange less than Euro 70!

BTW, I have an ATM card from NetBank. Until now they did NOT charge a fee for ATM transactions in Europe and Argentina.

Outside the UK (Germany, Spain, etc, etc) you may come across restaurants/stores, etc that WON'T take credit cards, only local debit cards.
This is where having an ATM card comes in most handy - as nearly any US ATM card can work at most European banks.
Why don't you consider getting a Visa or MasterCard Debit card (it's an ATM card BUT can also be used at traditional credit card accepting outlets - the funds are just debit'd right away from your account)

The fact is, that banks, credit cards, hotels and airport Bureau de Changes shouldn't be allowed to charge any fee, commission or a ratio above and beyond the actual amount. All amounts must remain as they are posted by the books.
I recommend people go to Thailand and make their exchange transactions, then travel to their country of choice. Hahaha!
Otherwise call the cops on the banks and devalue their currencies. Euros are a junk currency and you will see banks charge even higher ratios for Euro transactions. Japan does.
