Cologne hotel advice?
My cousin and I are doing some touring by rail in March and will be spending one weeknight in Cologne Thursday 3/22/01. It does not appear to be a night of a major congress, as all the hotels I've checked appear to have availability.
Any recommendations for a small 2.5* type place near the train station/Dom and the Fruh brewpub? Our budget is 150-180 DM for a room with two twin beds. We're getting in at about 1500 from Trier, otherwise I'd just take my chances with the tourism office at the train station.
Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

The tourism office is probably the best bet (across the plaze and street from the front of the cathedral). The adjacent Dom Hotel usually has DEM 200 rates during the weekends.

I stayed at the Rennaissance. Fine hotel, cenrally located, approx 10 min walk to the DOM and the Roman Museum (Do not miss it). Try calling Marriott to see if they have a AAA or Entertainment Discount rate at that hotel, if the posted rates are too high. Buffet Breakfast should be included, and in Germany, I have found it to include Lox at the Marriotts/Rennaissnces.

Terenz,
I used the tourist office way back in '91 (actually my first use of a tourist office booking service) and was pleasantly surprised on an October weeknight as we got a 3* with a junior suite for 100 DEM! If I can't find anything known to be good for under 190 DM, I'll use them and take my chances.
I was hoping for the Dom Hotel, but as it's a Thursday night they're still over 350 DM.
Doc2Be,
The Rennaisance is unfortunately 136 Euros, which is 30% over our budget. But, we'll keep it in mind. [Fri/Sat in AMS, however, we did land the Crowne Plaza Schipol for 160 NLG(!)/night with breakfast]

I know those are the posted rates -- I checked for you!! However, if you call the toll free #, they MAY have other rates available, including the AAA or Entertainment Discount rates, I spoke of. Other hotels, accept those discounts. Also, I find that a very large breakfast will hold me til evening, especially if I sneak away some fruit. Moreover, you can earn Marriott points or airline miles at 3 to the $ if you so designate your Marriott Rewards account (You do have one??).
Therefore, could it not help by inquiring?
