States with internal flights

This is just a random thought exercise I came up with.

All 50 states in the US currently have commercial airline service, but a few are probably small enough that there are no nonstop flights entirely within the state.

I am curious as to how many of the 50 states people have had in-state flights within.

For me, the answer is only two: California and Texas. I tend to take a train/bus or drive short distances.

I’ve flown on scheduled flights on common carriers intra-California, intra-Colorado, intra-Florida, intra-Minnesota, intra-Michigan, intra-Pennsylvania, intra-Virginia, intra-New York, intra-Hawaii, intra-Texas, intra-Ohio, intra-North Carolina, intra-Georgia, intra-Wisconsin, intra-Illinois, intra-Nevada. I may even have left out one or two that I have taken. There are intra-Washington flights too.

Mileage runs and the benefits of throwaway ticketing with even mileage tickets have really expanded the horizons.

Update: Massachusetts also has intra-state flights, beside those mentioned elsewhere in this thread.

I did SEA-PSC-SEA in WA state right at the end of 2021 to get me over the line for MVP Gold status with Alaska.

Only other ones would be intra-Hawaii flights.

Intra Texas: Pretty much everything. Heck, I did AUS-IAH-DFW RT 2 weeks ago.
Intra NC: CLT-AVL
Intra MI: DTW-LAN
Intra LA: Did SHV-MLU multiple times back in the 90's

This got me interested in finding states that don't have scheduled internal passenger flights. As of now I think 20 out of 50 would qualify:
  • Alabama
  • Arkansas
  • Connecticut
  • Delaware
  • Indiana
  • Iowa
  • Kansas
  • Kentucky
  • Louisiana
  • Maryland
  • Nebraska
  • New Hampshire
  • New Jersey
  • North Dakota
  • Oklahoma
  • South Carolina
  • South Dakota
  • Vermont
  • Wisconsin
  • Wyoming
And throwing non-states into the mix, Guam and the District of Columbia...

Thinking..

Alaska
Arizona
California
Florida
Hawaii
Montana
Oregon
Texas
Washington

Probably some more...

Forgetting some states that have massive airline hubs like Virginia (IAD-RIC), Colorado (DEN-Many cities), New York (JFK/LGA-MAny Cities), Utah (SLC-SGU), etc.

Alaska, California, Washington, Florida, Texas, Hawaii, Pennsylvania, Missouri, and Tennessee for me. Possibly more when I was younger.

Also, fun fact, Delaware didn't have service until Avelo started flights on 2/1/23 after Frontier pulled out during Covid

I think Ohio and Tennessee could be added to the list unless there's some service I'm not tracking, even including EAS, even if both are states that could on the list of having had intra-state service at one point when the CLE and MEM hubs were active. My quick glance at the airports show that any EAS service is not from the same respective state.

Off the top of my head I've flown intra-state in:
-California
-Florida
-Georgia
-Hawaii
-Michigan
-North Carolina
-Ohio
-Texas
-Washington

And plenty more, as evident by my list above.
