States with internal flights
This is just a random thought exercise I came up with.
All 50 states in the US currently have commercial airline service, but a few are probably small enough that there are no nonstop flights entirely within the state. I am curious as to how many of the 50 states people have had in-state flights within. For me, the answer is only two: California and Texas. I tend to take a train/bus or drive short distances. |
I’ve flown on scheduled flights on common carriers intra-California, intra-Colorado, intra-Florida, intra-Minnesota, intra-Michigan, intra-Pennsylvania, intra-Virginia, intra-New York, intra-Hawaii, intra-Texas, intra-Ohio, intra-North Carolina, intra-Georgia, intra-Wisconsin, intra-Illinois, intra-Nevada. I may even have left out one or two that I have taken. There are intra-Washington flights too.
Mileage runs and the benefits of throwaway ticketing with even mileage tickets have really expanded the horizons. Update: Massachusetts also has intra-state flights, beside those mentioned elsewhere in this thread. |
I did SEA-PSC-SEA in WA state right at the end of 2021 to get me over the line for MVP Gold status with Alaska.
Only other ones would be intra-Hawaii flights. |

Intra NC: CLT-AVL Intra MI: DTW-LAN Intra LA: Did SHV-MLU multiple times back in the 90's |

Thinking..
Alaska Arizona California Florida Hawaii Montana Oregon Texas Washington Probably some more... |
Forgetting some states that have massive airline hubs like Virginia (IAD-RIC), Colorado (DEN-Many cities), New York (JFK/LGA-MAny Cities), Utah (SLC-SGU), etc.
|
Alaska, California, Washington, Florida, Texas, Hawaii, Pennsylvania, Missouri, and Tennessee for me. Possibly more when I was younger.

This got me interested in finding states that don't have scheduled internal passenger flights. As of now I think 20 out of 50 would qualify:
Off the top of my head I've flown intra-state in: -California -Florida -Georgia -Hawaii -Michigan -North Carolina -Ohio -Texas -Washington |
This topic actually came up on another forum that I post on. At the time when I looked it up (about a year ago), this is a list of how many commercial scheduled flights operated intra-state:
AK - 191 CA - 69 TX - 53 FL - 21 HI - 16 CO - 11 MI - 10 NY - 8 IL, MN, NC, PA, WA - 7 GA, VA - 6 AZ, MA, MT - 5 OR - 4 UT - 3 MO, NM - 2 ID, NV, ND, RI, WV - 1 AL, AR, CT, DE, IN, IA, KS, KY, LA, ME, MD, MS, NE, NH, NJ, OH, OK, SC, SD, TN, VT, WI, WY - 0 And for my travels, I've flown: AK: ANC-FAI (UA) AZ: PHX-TUS (HP) CA: LAX-SFO (UA) and STS-LAX (UA) FL: JAX-TPA (3M) MN: MSP-DLH (DL) NC: CLT-RDU (US) UT: SGU-SLC (DL) VA: IAD-ORF (UA) |
I actually looked up intra-provincial/territorial flights for Canada too. Data as of almost exactly a year ago.
QC - 169 ON - 104 BC - 65 NL - 55 MB - 41 NU - 39 SK - 29 NT - 26 AB - 12 YT - 5 NS - 1 NB, PE - 0 |
pretty much every state that has either an airline hub or focus city.
