Having flown with 2 young kids often, I've never been refused a request to switch around in order for the family to be together.

If anyone ever does, I'll just say, OK, no problem. And I predict within 10 minutes of the flight, people will be begging me to switch seats with them since having a 3-5 year old next to you - that isn't yours - on a flight is briefly mentioned by Dante in his famous poem.

For a parent with a child, I would switch. Of course in that situation, 99% of the time there is a window or aisle to switch to in that situation.
To be honest, I would be scared to say no to a Big 3 FA in the current climate. One would have to be very delicate in saying no nicely, so as not to be construed to be disruptive.

Yes people have tried this before and my response is, "I'll take my chances." All I do is put on my Bose noise cancelling headphones and ignore whatever the kid may be doing.

How do those work when the kid pours chocolate milk on you?

Simple, ring the call bell and ask the F/A to bring the cookies a little early

Little kids? No problem, get that snot monster away from me. (I say that part in jest, but seriously, I'm not flying next to a toddler.) I'm not one to switch for adults or teenagers. Especially if I'm in a seat that I like, and I am being asked to change to a less desirable seat.

So what if you had an aisle exit row with an open middle seat next to you and a mother offers you her current middle seat for your aisle so that she she can sit next to her toddler. Would you do it?

No, it is against FAA rules for exit row seating
No toddler in exit row and no parent with kids on same flight in exit row.
