This Saturday when I arrived at the Hilton Newark Airport I found the gathering of the Actors, Models and Talent for Christ. I couldn't resist a photo op:

I somehow through a friend ended up on a three day cruise that was an "Adult Entertainment Expo". I got an insider rate and was not expecting it. Certainly was very odd, every time I see the girls from Cat House on HBO I am reminded that I was at their table for meals. They had a film shoot as well as award ceremonies.

The problem is you're unlikely to get laid at that one without a marriage proposal.

That reminds me of the time I found myself in the middle of a "Jews for Jesus" rally in San Francisco back in the 70s.

Last year I was in Melbourne during the Jehovah Witnesses convention. Also coincided with the Moto GP and Caulfield Cup.

Not a hotel room to be had on the Saturday. They weren't too rowdy but there was much giggling in the lobby of a morning. Anyway, I went and stayed with my brother.

Never forget your towel!

I have attended Dragoncon in Atlanta every year for the last 12 years. It's always a fantastic party for five days. We take over 5 downtown Atlanta hotels (Hyatt, Marriott Marquis, Hilton, Sheraton and Westin) and keep growing. About 80,000 attendees. Many of us (me included) bring several costumes for the fun of it, for contests, etc. My recent costumes include steampunk, Catelyn Stark from Game of Thrones, and Viking.

Oddly, before my first Dragoncon, I had attended an IRS conference at the Hyatt in Atlanta the month before. It was definitely a high contrast comparison between the two!

I've also been sitting at a small motel eating dinner with two artists, after setting up our booths for a nearby art show that opened in the morning. In came about 40 bikers (the true kind, not the weekend warriors). They were loud, but very nice. We chatted with the leader for a while. As we were getting our bill, we discovered he had paid it already, as an apology for interrupting our quiet dinner.

Also, in a hotel in Kingsbridge, London, there was a traditional Indian wedding - the saris were incredibly beautiful and colorful!

They looked like they were getting ready to support the arrival of some VVIP or a massive protest. So there's my workmate, a very confused Chinese couple, me, and the most heavily armed lobby ever in the history of ever. I feel confident in saying I had the safest hotel room in all of Europe that night.

At the San Luis Obispo Embassy Suites stayed with a hotel full of CHP. Had some kind of training going on. Funny thing is it happened on two separate trips. They must have a State training facility nearby.

I once stayed in a hotel in Cali Colombia where there was some sort of a talent search for attractive female models (think car show not fashion). I'd say 40-50 women showed up and were hanging around the lobby.

Mind you, in Colombia many of the ladies dress provocatively even by American standards. It was pretty surreal.

Airport hotel in Greensboro several years ago.

A "Federation" Convention (a la "Star Trek"). Several hundred people in Star Trek-type uniforms, include some "Admirals" who looked like they couldn't do two push-ups.

They had break out sessions on starship engineering, interstellar law, etc.

I can unfortunately confirm from personal experience that the same problem exists with swing dance conventions, too.

Being a bowler, i have to correct this. Bowling does not use wax, it uses oil. Many professional patterns are named after animals (wolf, bear, etc). And to make a long story short, the oil can be put down on a lane in different patterns to make it harder to score. And, we argue about them all the time.

Anyways.....

Nothing strange in terms of convention, but i did find it curious to be in an international chain hotel in Doha, seeing men in the traditional, white garb going through a few (or very likely more) bottles of Heineken...

Currently at the Marriott RTP in Durham, NC and there's a Furry Convention. I'll be at the bar later and likely won't need to watch the TV for entertainment!
