Was at an HGI with my wife and kids a couple of years ago in Toronto. Hotel was hosting a convention of tanning salon owners & staff...90% women...100% all had that hilarious orange skin color. My kids remarked that it looked like the hotel had been taken over by oompa loompas.
Hard to keep a straight face when orange faced - tooth whitened person is smiling at you in the elevator.

My father reminded me of another strange hotel event. We were staying at a Howard Johnson's in the Bronx. I had gone into the lobby to FaceTime a friend, so I was sitting there for a couple hours. At various points, about 5 couples walked in with no luggage what so ever. One couple had a large video camera and big tripod. I guess the hotel was pretty popular

I have a relative who is a physician. When he is traveling by plane, and would rather rest than chat, if asked, he will claim to be in sales - embalming equipment. That usually ends the conversation.

A few years ago I shared a hotel (Swissotel in Basel) with the delegates at a conference to commemorate the hundredth anniversary of the discovery of LSD. Actually quite a serious, non-fun bunch!

Not a hotel but I once inadvertantly arrived in a town where a sea shanty festival was taking place. It was brilliant

Reminds me of the night when I took my husband to see The Village People at Crown Casino in Melbourne and around the corner at the local huge stadium Kiss were on. I laughed later when the two crowds mingled at the Casino... a big contrast of the fans!!

His seat mate would be rather shocked to see him get up to help when "is there a doctor on board" is announced. He would be sure the guy had popped off and your relative was hoping to sell some of his embalming stuff!

This isn't exactly funny, weird or bizarre (although some folks might find it so) but this thread reminded me of the following:

At the Hotel Crillon in Paris, I was staying at the time of some international debutante ball. Families were checking in with tons of luggage and the staff told me that later that day the lobby area would be closed off for the event, with the front desk and concierge relocated to the tiny gift shop just past the main entrance. I was also told that I would be welcome to attend (not quite sure how this was phrased) later if I wanted, which seemed to mean dancing a bit at the end of the evening.

When I returned from dinner in arguably acceptable clothing, I did decide to take a peak at the festivities from an unobtrusive spot and an assistant manager brought me a glass of good champagne.

The next day, it was amusing to notice the absolutely amazing pearls worn with blue jeans at breakfast. Mikimoto was a primary sponsor and apparently one of the family had "come out" the night before, so a large contingent of them was in attendance, including a very respected couple that might have been the great grandparents.

It was interesting to see how fast the entire hotel was transformed for the party and then how quickly all evidence of the event had disappeared by the next morning.

At the Hilton in harrisburg, pa I saw a convention for the hat makers that supply the above. An entire event space full of spectacular hats.

That is the "Balle des dbutantes". Held annually for years. Don't know where they did it this year since the Crillon is closed. Every whose who's daughter does it.

Over lunch I was told that "Pandora" (never heard of them) http://pandoragroup.com/en/Products, does a cruise where it invites some customers who just talk how much those bracelets mean/changed their lives.

I'm not sure we're talking about the same debutants' ball. The one I witnessed was small and had the word international in its name. It wasn't a French "every who's who" but rather seemed to be an interesting mix of international families.

The Balle does have international people/kids taking part in it. My daughter did and we aren't french. But maybe you saw another function.

Not me but my dad....

...was in Vegas for a metallurgist conference and one of the nights during the conference the hotel was also hosting the AVN awards (porn industry).
He said the elevator rides and lobby strolls were simply outstanding.
Some of the guys at the conference also went to the "red carpet" but he had to give that a miss as he was giving a paper the following morning.

Surprised nobody has mentioned that every year in January the Venetian in Vegas became the most bizarre mix of people (even more than usual) as CES attendees crossed paths with the AVN porn convention. It was like oil and water.

I think they are now held on different weeks.
