The OP criticized the guy for several things. Standing in line was not one of them. I don't know how many other ways I can say it.

Flyer Talk used to be fun and breezy with information. It seems to me (go ahead and call me names) that for some time it has become crabby people complaining about everyone else, while those folks complaining are all pristine in their habits.
What in the name of all that is airlines has the OP done wrong in this instance? What exactly is the absolute proper minute that one is allowed to get in line? What is wrong in making mention that people are wearing wacko/weirdo clothes? (Who do you know that wears jean shorts, come on.) What is wrong with mentioning manners?
If someone took off their smelly shoes I would probably mention it to them but if I was stuck in the seat and had to ask them to move and they huffed and puffed I would have had to say about that too.
Yes this is a forum for people that fly, and all aspects of flying should be fair fame, including people with poor choices in clothing, comments on someone asking your seat assignment, standing in line and taking off your shoes if your feet smell.
I am checking into Flyer Talk less and less as most of the threads involve "only talk about flying First Class", only talking about your status being demeaned by golds and plats and "lets just drown the silvers", my "perfect airline" will never be the same as the "worst airline in the world" is being merged", and why do other people line up to get on the plane when everyone knows I am the only person allowed to line up on the carpet? Yes, that is a run on sentence.
Geez, people are you all that important? I thought Flyer Talk was for people that like to fly, not the elite bunch that hate the people who are not in their "status". Why not just create a forum for those people that are just not as good as "us".

unless you lurked for say five years prior to your join date, FT has not changed that much in the last two years. It was like this in Aug 2009 so I'd be curious as to what you are basing this post on?

To be clear, I am pointing out that there are indicators of a pot-kettle dynamic here. I just don't buy that "he felt like standing" was the reason he stood in the line. It smells of rationalization. You can stand anywhere if you feel like standing. I think he was as eager to be first as the other guy was. And probably for the same reasons.

I think some Elites have become that way.. but not by their own fault..
Human nature gets accustomed to the haves of a FF program.. and when a significant amount of the perks are taken out of the program or programs get enhanced (negatively).. many FFers get upset..

In the end, having high elite status only means that you fly lots on commercial jets. If you wanna brag about being way up there, fly private, or find a way to get a ride on Air Force One, then that may be worth bragging about!
In the end, flying is a means to bring people together. How else can you wake up one morning in your bed in Texas and still make it to your class in Washington DC later that evening? Flying! Or manage to go across the country one afternoon to go see a game with a friend and be back the next morning? Flying!
Back in the 70's, people dressed up for flying as a sign of respect for how flying enhanced their lives, suddenly, the world just got a whole lot smaller. These days, people just take flying for granted. Maybe the airlines should band together and take a "vacation" from flying during a random week of the year and make people appreciate just how much the industry does to improve people's lives...

Some people are born DBs. There is nothing you can do. I find that smart-... remarks make you feel a bit better.
"I guess today you'll be second in line."
"I probably will take up all the overhead space. I should also let you know that I have a curry for breakfast and have IBS and generally don't like flying so much and usually get drunk to ease my nerves."
"I'm on my way home from the accounting convention. Shall I tell you all about the changes to IAS that are being implemented next year. The new tax regime is simply fascinating."
"Wow, those sure are nice shoes. What homeless shelter did you pick them up from?"

I posted elsewhere that I find common courtesy and decency among the general public lacking in society. For that, some members berated me, further proving my point. Indeed.
As we become more and more fast-paced, and more crowded in society, common courtesy and respect for one another is bound to suffer. Too many rats fighting for too little cheese.
I do my best to be pleasant when traveling. If not, I tend to just keep to myself and be quiet.
I'm in the middle of a 2 week 3900 mile trip. Not anywhere near as much fun as it used to be to fly. Maybe it's just me. Maybe not. But I am looking forward to getting home.
And along the way, I'll try and be courteous to my fellow travelers.

I had the pleasure of sitting next to the OP today from DLH-->ORD (helluva a nice guy btw^)...I can't comment on whether the OP himself has stinky feet
as there was a woman on the CRJ who was painting her nails...holy acetone batman
Talk about lack of common courtesy.
