A question on both electronics and medication

Been a while since I've flown.

Is there typically an electrical jack on or around the seat armrest that will allow for plugging in an HP iPaq PDA (Windows Mobile OS with standard 110 male plug from a typical U.S. transformer)?

Is there any limit, qualification or requirement for transporting Rx and OTC pills (tablets or capsules) within one's carry on bag?

Thanks,

Mark

markg2, a belated welcome to FlyerTalk!

We changed your title somewhat for clarity and have moved it to our TravelBuzz! forum where it's perhaps more apropos.

Enjoy your upcoming travel.

http://www.seatguru.com should help you with the first question, which is airline, aircraft, and seating class specific.

If you travel internationally, check to see if the drug laws in destination countries differ with respect to the drugs you bring (e.g. a drug that is OTC in your home country may require a prescription in another, or a drug that is OTC or available by prescription in your home country may be outright illegal in another).

As suggested in the previous reply, answers to both of your questions are heavily dependant on which airline you fly and where you are going. Some domestic airlines have power ports in first and/or business class seats but not all have them in economy. For international flights, you can almost always count on power in the premium classes but only on some airlines in economy.

Your question on medications can vary widely by country. For example, Japan regulates Sudfed and you can get into trouble carrying it into the country. For prescriptions, you are probably ok carrying enough for your stay in the original, labeled bottles but in some cases you will want to have an original prescription signed by your physician.

You need to be more specific to get specific answers. The airline-specific sub-forum for your airline will probably have the best information.

I usually travel with an iPod and a Kindle. I usually charge them up right before I leave for one of those LAX-LHR-LAX flights I take every year.

This year I decided to proactively look for seats with power points, and did some research. I will be flying on AA 777s across the ocean. This is what I have found, and I do indeed invite correction if I am wrong. My UK flight isn't until November.

1. The power points are cigarette-lighter style plug-ins. You cannot use a "typical" US style two-flat-prong plug. You have to get a cigarette-lighter style power cord.

2. Not every seat has a power point. If you are flying First or Business, you will probably have a power point at your seat, but there are few in Coach where you will find my butt squished in.

3. I looked at seat maps in Seatguru, Seatexpert and the AA.com websites. They were inconsistant on identifying seats with power points. They all agreed that on the plane I will be on, Row 33 has a power point, so I grabbed that seat.

Time will tell if all this is correct or not. I'll still pre-charge my iPod and Kindle, but it will sure be great to have the means to recharge them while in flight.

Given the number of airlines and planes I'll fly to and from + the information just received here, I won't bother checking the sites mentioned for the specific plane configurations regarding power availability--not worth the time but I really do appreciate now knowing.

The flights are all within the continental U.S. so I presume I will not have a problem with OTC and Rx tablets but since there was not a clear answer here I'll call United.

Thanks,

Mark

You should be OK with all meds if they are carried in their original containers. Prescription meds should have the full pharmacy label, including your name, etc.
