Suppose I wanted to export a pst file of my emails from Outlook, but the administrator settings don't permit it (and I have no access to administrator settings). I can export to comma delimited, etc., but these exports don't include attachments, which is what I need to get.

Any ideas?

Are you sure exporting the PST file is your only option? What if you setup an IMAP based email account and copy over all your emails? You'll then have the option to download the emails on to another computer directly from the IMAP server.

I don't have any way of setting up an IMAP server on the system -- we have a Citrix system and I've got no access to anything except the limited level of control permitted by the sysadmin.

Can you navigate to the directory containing the PST file? You could then copy it over to another directory.

The problem that PTravel is experiencing is that there is an administrative option in Windows/Outlook that prevents the creation of a new PST file from Outlook, not that the existing file isn't there. On top of that, since they are using a Citrix/Terminal Services environment there isn't even an OST file that is available to convert into a PST as a "cheat" to the issue.

There are two alternatives I can think of, neither of which are attractive. You'll have to manually forward the emails to another account or save the messages as MSG files (to include the attachment) and then import those back into whatever you want later. The export/import would be relatively less traceable by your net admin group; they can watch the emails passing through the system as you forward them pretty easily.

If you export the messages, is that done in bulk, or emai by email? If in bulk, do you end up with a separate file for each email? I have a number of PST files that I manage which originated from my corp email. I'm okay with maintaing these, but there is are contents in a folder or two that I wouldn't mind having in text or other formats outside of Outlook

Thanks every body. I'm going to try to setup an IMAP server on one of my remote machines and see if I can add the account and sync them. I found a free Windows OS called Macallan that I'm currently installing remotely (I'm in SF -- my personal LAN with the remote machine is in LA). I know nothing about IMAP, so this is going to be a bit of a challenge.

Google Hosted Apps can run as an IMAP server for you. Way easier than setting it up yourself. If you want a temp account on one of my domains just PM me and I'll set it up.

Make sure that you can add another account to your Outlook profile before you go through too much trouble setting up the other stuff.

For that matter, so can a normal GMail account.

Okay, I've configured my gmail account to support IMAP and was able to set the account up on my firm's Citrix Outlook.

In order to get my firm email folders, is it just a question of copying them to the Gmail IMAP account in Outlook and then waiting for my local computer's Outlook to sync?

Never mind -- I just tried it and it works!

Everything seems to transfer okay, except that the attachments are showing up as plain text binary code within the message, rather than as attachments. Is there some setting I need?
