What is this file?

C:\Documents and Settings\Teacher49\Local Settings\Temp\vdogda7j.exe is infected with Downloader.MisleadApp

I just got this message after running Symantec's free internet based virus checker.

Apparently this is the only nasty I have on my drives or in memory.

Does anyone know what vdogda7j.exe is? The Google doesn't provide a hit.

Can I safely just delete this exe file or is it what is holding the free world together?

Thanks for any help!!!

I'm no expert, but from the location of the file ("local settings \ temp"), it's not a vital system file and you can safely delete it.

It's a trojan. Here's an explanation from McAfee: http://vil.nai.com/vil/content/v_144179.htm

My personal suggestion is to buy some anti-virus software that will deal with this and other issues so you don't have to worry.

Great. File is gone, never saw the toolbar.

As a user since 1985, I have never had a problem.

I have tried anti-virus software and it has always created problem. Everyone once in while, a scare story gets me to the Symantec site to run their free scan. Of over 131,000 files, this was the only infected one and it seemed not to have served its purpose because I did not have anti-virus software for it to mimic!

So I think I will continue to practice safe computing and also to go bare back.

Thanks for the help, all!!!

If someone doesn't want to buy antivirus software, there is a decent free alternative in the free version of AVG ( http://free.grisoft.com/ )

Also, to the OP: in rare cases, there are important things in temp before you reboot. I'd recommend rebooting before deleting anything in temp... anything left in there after a reboot will be safe to delete. This would be like installers for really, really old software.

I find the combination of Trend Micro PC-cillin (purchased) and Spybot Search & Destroy (Shareware) to be very effective and problem free.

I've had problems with Norton/Symantec freezing up my system.
