I think I saw on one of the demos that you do the transfer wirelessly - but that would seem a slow process...

Just a question to teh US based citizens. I am thinking of buying an MBA when I visit NY in March. I am however wondering if I can avoid the NY sales taxes by buying online and having it shipped to my office in NY. Does that work at all?

Another way is with Time Machine. If you have a backup of your existing computer on an external drive then it can restore from there. It should also works if you have a hacked Airport Extreme / Time Machine backup, or a Time Capsule.

The last time I transfered with target disk mode, it took several hours. With only an 80 gig drive in the Air, it probably won't take that long.

That should probably work, but the AppleStore collects tax. I would order from someplace like Amazon.com which does not collect the tax.

The only wired port. There are also wireless options, some of them quite fast.

Apple and brick/mortar (eg J&R) will charge sales tax, no way around it. Only solution is from say amazon.com, smalldog.com, etc. - free shipping and no sales tax.

Any merchant that has a physical presence in a state has to charge state sales tax when shipping into that state. If there were no Apple stores in New York State, for example, they wouldn't have to charge the tax - but there are, so they do.

Vermont doesn't have an Apple Store. I guess you can get a hotel room for a night and have it shipped to Vermont if you really want to avoid the sales tax.

orygun

I have larger purchases like this shipped to oregun at a friend, they slap a fedex ground mailer on it, and we're done. No sales tax.

I seem to recall there being a reseller in Montpelier for some reason. Also, your local BB store probably carries them. The chain does sell them and if they don't have one in stock, I'm sure they won't complain about special ordering an $1800 laptop for you.

I'm concerned.

I ordered a MBA and I have regrets. After I ordered it I noticed that it did not have firewire. This is a problem - so many of my peripherals are firewire which are critical for use in my business. And being able to run a whole system of a firewire HD is really important. With only 80 HD using an external will be important. Also what about empower? I don't think my current MBP's empower connector will work with the MBA because of the way the slant is. Am I assuming this correctly on the empower situation?

Once I get it I will post up some pictures and give my comments. I might send it back. I'm pretty sad. I want to love the MBA.

We all do, but it's just not the right product for everybody.

I'm hoping that the next version of it is better. I would like to see a larger hard drive, an additional USB port, a LAN port, and I guess you would like to see a firewire port. Many people would like to see an integrated optical drive as well, but that would be difficult to do with the current form factor.

Screw the optical drive, how about a user replaceable battery? The lack of this on the Air strikes me as a bit of a scam. Want a new battery sorry, you have to buy it from Apple, no refurbished or much cheaper non-OEM new batteries for you.

The news I've seen is that the bottom plate is held on by a couple screws and that the battery is not soldered in place. Should make changing batteries not too difficult.

There are plenty of iPod aftermarket batteries out there, so I expect that eventually we will see non-OEM batteries for the air as well. The computer isn't even out for general sale yet and you're already making assumptions about what will or will not be available from 3rd parties.

Really though, how much are you going to save on a non-oem battery? Maybe $50-$60 at most. That's really insignificant in comparison to the cost of the computer and depreciation.
