I have never owned a mac, but if I had to do a job and it paid 100+k/year, 3 grand for a new mac don't look all that bad. I have owned a lot of xerox OS, which was the birth of mac.

I also have done a backup, and dumped a lot desktops if I cannot fix them in 2 hours or two parts swaps.

course that's more like $4-500 these days, not 3 grand.

Unfortunately, a lot of the software that I run isn't available for Mac, nor am I in a position to replace the 6 other computers on my home LAN and all the software that I use on them for a platform change because I'm not thrilled with the initial release of Vista. For what it's worth, Vista is now ticking like a clock except for (1) the NIC issue, which will go away when I get a docking station for the SZ -- it has a built-in gigabit nic, and (2) the copy-across-the-network-slowness issue that, I suspect, will be resolved by a patch or, at worst, Service Pack 1. For the interim, if I have big files or a lot of files, I can just ftp 'em across the network, which is lightning fast.

I've even tried re-setting the gigabit router to see if I could "jog" the card into realizing it had a high-speed connection, but that didn't work either. I think that when the card is pluged in it causes some kind of bug in the TCP/IP stack, but I haven't a clue about how to deal with it.
Cloning the MAC address of my laptop to the router fixed my connectivity problems.

Wait until you get an MP3 file from someone and youve just been in a skype session. Check out the file to find that it is running voice commands on your laptop and you are locked out.

It has happened.

MS say that it would only be possible if you have microphone and speakers activated at the same time.

All I say is "MS, ever heard of VOIP communication and what parts of the laptop does it use for that?"

You'd have to be a mighty big idiot to play an MP3 file that says "delete all files" and then click on "ok" when the user account manager asks for permission.

This "vulnerability" was pretty much bogus and the "it has happened" part really isn't true, it was someone asking a hypothetical question.

Plus, if you are indeed running Skype and use the microphone then you have the voice command option turned off.

That's a different problem than what I'm having.

I've tried forcing both the linkspeed and nic speed to 1 gig, but it doesn't help. The card is good (it works on my other laptops) and with the same gigabit switch that the SZ is connected to. I've given up (at least I was able to get a full install of Office 2003 with no errors, so last night's re-install wasn't completely in vain).

Any suggestions?
This simply sounds like a driver issue. What brand or card is it? Are you using the default Vista driver?

Sorry, I was writing while I was trying to get out of the office (and hoping for a last minute fix). Thank you.

For what it's worth, I returned home to spend an hour on the phone with a Sony tech who, unlike the other Sony tech's I've spoken with, seemed to know his stuff. We finally concluded that it's a Vista problem, Sony can't do anything and I simply can't use that NIC on this machine until Microsoft comes up with a driver fix.

It's been a very frustrating week.

Out of curiosity, what was the problem? If your NIC shipped with an in-box driver, it should have been pretty well tested and should work. If the drivers were written by somebody else, it is up to them to fix the driver.

I remember Windows 2000. It turned my old computer into a wired doorstop. I'll pass on Vista for now.

So....back when OS X was first introduced, it was completely trouble free and no one had any problem with it whatsoever? Every program (including third party ones) written for OS 9 was also immediately available for OS X and worked flawlessly? All third party peripherals connected without a hitch? No one had the need to boot into OS 9 to use certain programs? Did all the Apple faithful say "wow, this is the greatest operating system I've ever seen! I couldn't imagine going back to OS 9!"
