For what it's worth, I returned home to spend an hour on the phone with a Sony tech who, unlike the other Sony tech's I've spoken with, seemed to know his stuff. We finally concluded that it's a Vista problem, Sony can't do anything and I simply can't use that NIC on this machine until Microsoft comes up with a driver fix.

It's been a very frustrating week.
