Can I connect my IPhone by cable to my Windows laptop and use it for a 3G (or Edge even) data connection?

Nope.

It's my first smartphone. I've been using Nokias for years but this time I made the leap.

It is good and I'm impressed. But, at risk of repeating what others have said, the battery life is not good.

The Motorola brick (way, way pre star-tac) I had in the mid 90s had a standby time of a massive 9 hours. I've had Nokias that would go a good 4 days without charging. The new iPhone discharges much mnore like the former than the latter.

Yeah that's the only way I could justify paying $30 or more for mobile data, is if I could tether it and get more use out of it.

Rather than be limited to some surfing on a mobile device with a small screen to kill some time here and there.

On a per hour and per megabyte basis, mobile data is way more expensive than the connection you use at home.

Of course, if they allow tethering, they probably couldn't support the increased use of data and would have to raise prices.

Just got a text from my ATT store guy. No iPhones showed up today.

And none today. No idea when they will get more for walk-ins. They did receive today the first batch for direct fulfillment orders that were done last Friday.

That's the route I ended up going; quote is "7 to 21 days."

Is there any way to tell Opera to remember the ID and password for a particular website? For a web browser, it looks pretty minimal.

Thanks. I wonder if some enterprising hacker out there will open this particular door? I would be kind of surprised if it hasn't been done yet.

It has been done (as of yesterday), but it's a horribly cumbersome solution which requires quite a lot of work.

But I'm sure that sooner or later someone will build a one-click wifi sharing/tethering app.

Yea! Thanks Scott. I look forward to having a nice 16GB 3G iPhone that is unlocked, jailbroken and tether-able. I can wait til September before getting impatient. :D

Thanks for the advice. I called ATT, termed the FAN number from my account, and went back to the Apple store. It still was an involved process due to being a former AT&T Wireless customer - pre Cingular - and my account was never converted, or something like that. The Apple guys in the store were terrific, and spent about 20 mins on the phone with AT&T to get everything straight.

Were you able to confirm that the discount went in to effect on your iPhone plan? I just re-subscribed to the discount through my employer. It's an automated process via a link on our intranet. I got a confirmation email even though there was text on the web page that the iPhone didn't qualify for the corporate discount. I guess I'll wait to see my next bill whether it worked or not.

Along the lines of a recent question about blocking incoming calls, is there a 3rd party app for 1.4 jailbroken phones to disable all incoming calls, but allow SMS?

When in distant foreign countries with high roaming termination fees, I don't want to receive any calls. But I do want to receive and send a few SMS's. Well actually I have BiteSMS for sending, but I need to receive too.

Don't answer? Don't give out your number?

Overseas, aren't most incoming calls paid for by the caller?

Well my number is already well known, and even if it goes to voice mail I'm paying a roaming termination fee. When roaming most anywhere in the world, calls are paid by both parties. That's why it's such a lucrative business for the operators.

My store just told me that they've been told by Apple not to expect any iPhones for "at least a month."

One of the lookup tools that folks have developed tells me I'm 38th in line at my store for a Direct Fulfillment ship.

My company just implemented a new plan where they will pick up my entire monthly subscription. I never turned the corporate discount back on. Sorry.

Hmm, then jailbreak and unlock the phone and then get a prepaid SIM?
