What they recently added is support for devices with integrated GPS, or even LBS GPS from the network. Currently only a couple phone offers this and are supported, but I am sure more will come, But the GPS function with an external Bluetooth GPS has always been there. If the iphone does a good Bluetooth integration it should be able to link with the com integration that is in the general google mapping function.

Google earth on my PPC never had GPS support till the most recent version. For fun I loaded the older version, and sure it enough it wasn't there.

Microsoft Live search had GPS support since it was introduced.

Many thanks

A sincere note of thanks to all of you early adopters out there. You're the ones on the front line who will make sure the iPhone is a slam dunk success (your out of pocket cost over 2 yr contract roughly $2K), and give Steve Jobs the funding for the 2nd gen iPhone at Christmas time and of course apple hitting $150 stock price

All of us will thank you again at Christmas time!

:D

not sure about google earth

not sure about google EARTH, I was talking about the google MAPS application and function

http://google.com/gmm/index.html

the google maps has it, and has had it since first release.
check it out. You have to have a gps enabled device, or external most likely bluetooth GPS device. the com ports have to match, but the com port config is in gmm 1.0

Just setup the bluetooth outside google maps, and it should find it okay, after restart. I had no problems using it on the HX4700 or on the treo 700wx.

here's a little linky I'll add.

Not sure if this process works, mine just worked out of the box, but I was using the bluetooth gps already on the hx4700 and treo 700wx. So, the COM stuff was probably already done.

I didn't have to do anything else

Google Maps for Windows Mobile has had GPS support since version 1.0.

Google Maps for Mobile (Java) didn't have GPS support until the most recent release.

Google Maps for PalmOS doesn't have GPS support.

Well, they DID say "June" :D

Expect pandemonium at the Apple and ATT Stores. The fanbois will be all over this one, even if it does mean signing away your life for 2 years.

Me? I'll wait for them to be hacked and unlocked. Or better yet: I'll wait for a European model with 3G.

CrazyOne Jun 3, 2007 10:28 pm

Still interests me, but I don't really have 500 bucks to blow on it right now. I assume they would let me re-up my Cingular/AT&T plan without much trouble. But for now I'll wait.

Heck, I still can't get a Wii (easily) at list price. :D Doubt iPhone will be easy either for a while.

The problem is the 2 year agreement... You can be pretty sure that within 2 years Apple will have at least one (or two) newer versions of the phone, so all those suckers that get the V1 phone will be stuck with it :D

bounty Jun 4, 2007 7:22 am

are they expecting the battery on the V1 model to last two years before conking out?

Yeah, there's that too. That's what happened to me when I got the very first gen Sidekick (although, granted, that was just a one year contract, and not long after that I decided I didn't need it).

There's going to have to be an upgrade path, I would think, but at what cost? The details of the pricing are still sketchy, not the $499/$599 numbers but how much it would be without the contract, that sort of thing. If a new model comes out in 6-12 months, providing for upgrading the hardware under the same phone number/contract is natural for those early adopters. But will it be 1000 bucks to do so?

I don't really understand where we're going to get a secondary unlocked market for these. If the only way to buy is 2-year contract, then this doesn't seem likely anytime soon. Well, I guess you could build the early term fee into the cost of such a thing, or maybe once the European model comes online, but would they even give you service? I keep reading that things are quite unusual in this Apple/AT&T deal. It wouldn't surprise me if part of that was to refuse to give the iPhone service to anyone who didn't acquire the phone. I mean, I guess you could throw a SIM in there, but it seems like some of the iPhone requires a specific service level. Maybe not though.

If there is no waiting list, do you just show up at the ATT store on June 29th and sgn up for one?
