HTC have launched a "rival" to the iPhone:

out today (in Europe). No 3G or GPS though - looks like they are mimicking the limited feature set of the iPhone as well. :D

If there is no waiting list, do you just show up at the ATT store on June 29th and sgn up for one?

That's what the local Cingular/ATT store told me.

Any idea whether this phone will work with Blackberry Enterprise Server to get email, either out of the box or with some add on software?

Heh, we're just looking at new smartphones here for some folks (see my thread), and while I'd love to consider iPhones, I can't mainly because I don't know how they will sync with our Zimbra email server. The details aren't there yet as to how it will sync with BES or anything else.

I think its reasonable to expect it will work with IMAP and Zimbra...

that being said, there is a *cough* bug *cough* in zimbra's imap IDLE that causes some phones to get headers only or IDLE updating doesnt work...

Apple might have an unlocking prevention scheme

It seems that Apple might require that their servers be placed inside operator networks for a variety of evil reasons, one of which is authentication. This would effectively make the Iphone unusable for me as a traveler.

Another evil purpose would be for Apple to directly collect revenue from media downloads and exercise DRM inside the operator network.

I'm sure it isn't unusable as a traveler, it may be unusable for a traveler who wants to use a local sim card.

That was my point. I said "effectively" because sometimes I need to use a local SIM for MMS or other application reasons. It's not only to save money. That's why I would never buy a phone that I couldn't unlock.

I suppose (bug notwithstanding). Just that I remember at the intro back in January didn't they say they had partnered with Yahoo for mail? (Even though they had partnered with Google for maps?) Maybe doesn't matter though. I looked at the page just now, and it does say it'll fetch mail from POP and IMAP. Course, that's only mail. "Sync" including contacts, calendar, etc. is another matter.

the pages say that the iphone comes with a camer but the video demo doesn't say anything about the camera(at leat until 3/4 way.) is there really a camera and i wonder if the iphone will accept sim cards?ie, working on gsm

Foady Jun 22, 2007 1:43 pm

there's 2 megapixel camera and a SIM card tray. the question is if the tray is accessible or not. in the US, the iPhone is locked into AT&T for 2 years (or more, depending on who you listen to). we'll find out Friday if we can swap out SIM chips or not.

Anyone watch the guided tour posted on Friday? I watched a couple hours ago, found it interesting. I know there are some phones that can do some or most of these thins, but I haven't seen one that can do them as easily. The menu that is on screen while you're on a call seems particularly useful.

I did see that and agree that it made it more interesting. It seemed very easy to use in that it was easy to do common, useful tasks. What is missing in my mind is the details of things like how it works with Exchange mail.

Windows Mobile has had that since around 2002...

Apple shows a lot of the very basic stuff, but like the previous poster said, I'd like to see some REAL stuff. Seeing the NYT for the 100'th time isn't enough. Show me some webmail, so me some flash intensive stuff.

Iphone can do gmail. AFAIK, flash support is not there in this iteration.
