once you have your finderID, plug it into this URL to see if the slingbox finder service can SEE the box, if it has sucessfully called out
http://srs.slingmedia.com/getDeviceI...20864AXXXX4933
replace the id= with your ID and then check it. If the finder service comes back with an external IP address and then port, you know the box is calling out correctly.
I would make sure you have some port forwarding setup on the router at home, to the 5001 that you are using. As well, if you setup the port to port 443, it gets around most firewall issues at remote locations better.

The Slingbox looks like the greatest thing since sliced bread. And I definitely want one. But I am thoroughly confused as to what hardware I will need to get other than the Slingbox unit itself. Any assistance would be appreciated.
What I've got:
What I've got:
(1) Time Warner high definition digital cable with the Scientific Atlantic Explorer 8300HD DVR;
(2) Roadrunner/Earthlink cable modem (wired for use with my home desktop);
(3) HP Pavilion zd7000 laptop with wireless internet (which would be used to watch TV on the road).
My big question is whether I need a wireless connection/router at home. Do I? And what other hardware purchases might be required to complete the set-up (wiring/installation of ethernet cable? a wireless bridge?).
(2) Roadrunner/Earthlink cable modem (wired for use with my home desktop);
(3) HP Pavilion zd7000 laptop with wireless internet (which would be used to watch TV on the road).

Sling and ICS
Anyone with experience setting up a Slingbox using ICS in WinXP? I have a 3g Data card and want to use ICS (XP Pro) on my laptop to connect to Slingbox.
I am not in the market to buy one of those fancy 3g data card routers currently on the market ...

?
?, do you want to connect the SLINGBOX to the Winxp box for getting on your network?, or do you want to be able to ACCESS the slingbox somehow using ICS with a laptop.
Of course, the latter will just work, you wouldn't need ICS enabled for that. I use my 3g card and 3g phone for connectivity remotely all the time, and get about 700kps, but the sbox from home only uplinks 650kps, but the stream is very good.

Sorry for not providing complete info ..
I am using my 3g card as my internet access (yes I know there is limited upstream bandwidth) and looking to attach the sling to my laptop (via Ethernet) to gain access to 3g card internet connection via ICS.
I am hoping someone can help in making sure I have ICS tweaked so I can access the sling (in this set-up) from another laptop or desktop PC at a remote location.

Sure,
No problem. So, you are going to want to do ICS with the 3G connection, and SELECT the ETHERNET port on the laptop. Then, just connect the slingbox to the Ethernet port, and the slingbox will get the DHCP from the laptop. Then, you would need to configure the ICS firewall, to setup the port and port forwarding for the slingbox. The slingbox MIGHT be able to do this, but I doubt it.
The only downside of the ICS, is that once you “bind” a connection type, wifi or Ethernet to the 3g connection, you have to UNBIND it again, in order to use it regularly like in the office or something.
Checkout the slingcommunity.com forums, to if someone has done this in a different way.

indeed
Indeed, unless your 3g card is a rev a or better, you are NOT going to have much upload bandwidth, which is the KEY with the slingbox.

The ethernet icon shows connected on the laptop and the light on front of sling shows I have made a successful connection and an IP address is assigned (of course I can't find the IP address - anyone know how to do this?) ...
This works fine with I connect another computer and I can access the internet connection with no problems - but for what ever reason I cannot access the Sling ...
Not much info over at Sling forums ...

I can highly recommend using port 443 as nmenaker previously suggested. It seems to get around all port forwarding issues that people have. My son used the slingbox while on study abroad in Norway for 4 months. He said it saved his sanity because of the lack of programming over. I use it at the office for breaking news stories, or when a good game is on during the daytime....

Slingbox and IP address
I admit to being technically impaired. I have been trying for two days to set up a slingbox. I use a mac 0S 4 with airport extreme, Have Cablevision Isp with motorola modem. I can watch slingbox around the house but not remotely..Airport is set up.
The problem is remote viewing.
Slingbox tech support says it is because i do not have a static IP and that ISP must provide it. Cablevision says it is not avail and if I switch to RCN they say yes but 15$ per month.. Is this the only way or am I doing something wrong or not understanding this..

You need to have port forwarding set up properly on your router. On mine as an example, I use port 443 and I have a Linksys router WRT54G. Port forwarding is under the Applications and gaming tab, then under the port forwarding tab. My settings are: Application: Sling Start: 443 End: 443 Protocol: TCP IP address: 192.168.1.237 and "enable" is checked
There is a ton of good info at www.slingcommunity.com

When Sling gets an IP address assigned via DCHP does it normally "default" to xxx.xxx.xxx.237?
I am still trying to figure out my ICS port forwarding issue - and wonder if the Sling's IP address is 192.168.0.237 (WinXP Pro assigning the IP via ICS)
Any programs out there I can run to verify the IP addy? I can't seem to find in on the WinXP machine that is passing out IP addresses via ICS.
