So when they say 2G data in other countries, it seems like from the country-by-country details that in many places it will be 3G connection but throttled down to 2G (128kbps) speeds?
Reason I wonder is IIRC, some countries like Japan had mostly proprietary technologies before 3G, so I don't think they even had 2G EDGE to begin with, much less connect now. If it's a throttled 3G connection I'm sure it will work. Since I'm passing through NRT this week maybe I'll try turning off 3G on my phone and seeing if there is any 2G data connection (although I'm on AT&T so no true indication of Tmo roaming). |
Another positive report. It looks like we are running on 3G here in Switzerland throttled to 128k (exactly). Spent 4 hours driving streaming Pandora (connects through US servers, so all US only services still work) and didn't have a single drop the whole way. Definitely beats t-mobile domestic EDGE service.
No problems with any data - slow 128k, but wayyy better than a lot of Hampton Inns I have stayed at. I could not be happier with this. Next couple weeks I'll report from Thailand, New Zealand, France, Japan, Korea and Germany. Looks like French Polynesia wasn't included in this free giveaway, so I won't be able to check there. |
So things are already in place f:Dr existing customers then? Do you know how much (if anything) you are being billed for this usage?

When customer service turned it on for me, I got a text message saying
'Welcome to Switzerland. Incoming texts/data free & unlimited. Visit t-mobile my account for high-speed data packs. Calls 20c/min.' Or something to that effect. If it is not the case, I have run up already around $2200 worth of roaming charges for 'free' music. Almost as bad as getting sued by the RIAA. |
is there a WiKi about this ?
will my pay as you account work ? and do I just turn the phone on when I am in another country or do I need to call T mobile and set something up this is good news for stop offs in Airports etc I would like to try it at Narita in a few weeks so want to set it up soon, thanks for the info |

I believe there is a link to FAQ somewhere in this thread. NO, PAYG will not work. One needs to sign up for one of the specified plans. You may be able to port your PAYG to one of these plans though.

How usable is the throttled internet that they provide? |
Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (Linux; Android 4.1.2; HTC One Build/JZO54K) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/30.0.1599.82 Mobile Safari/537.36)
It seems perfectly fine for email, light facebook, streaming audio, etc. Loading graphics is a bit slow, but usable. Video ads in Pandora loaded fine unfortunately. |
Is it also 20 cents per minute when you receive calls while roaming outside US?

Here's the FAQ again
http://support.t-mobile.com/docs/DOC-9455 They also posted some additional docs on roaming Checklist- http://support.t-mobile.com/docs/DOC-2182 Howard forums also noted there's something called #unleashTheTablet on Twitter tomorrow. Googled up this reference. http://www.androidcentral.com/t-mobi...erence-twitter Looks like the mobile broadband/tablet/internet plan might get some re-branding and overhaul. Actually, the mobile internet plan could be interesting for light voice user activating it on a tablet device. $20 for 500 MB or $240/year to use "unlimited" 128 kbps speed in the 100 countries could be a good deal. Possibly good enough to keep my current mobile carrier for domestic voice + LTE coverage and add T-mobile mobile internet plan to a data mostly travel device. "The following rate plans are eligible: Simple Choice plans, including consumer, business, data-only, and Mobile Internet (formerly Mobile Broadband)." |
I hope verizon matches this.

This is great for international travelers who don't care about high speed data and don't mind bad coverage.
After 3 years with AT&T (and before that a decade with Sprint) I switched to T-Mobile. What a mistake. Voice overage was okay but not as good as AT&T outside major metro areas, but the data coverage was even worse. Most of the time I found myself on Edge network, couldn't even get 3G much less LTE. This was mostly in the SF Bay Area (but not in the city). These were not remote rural areas but simply suburbs or build up resorts. And then there was the final straw: I called T-Mo before I went to Cabo and specifically asked them to confirm that my phone would work in Mexico (they did) and to add a special plan. When I landed I discovered that my phone was unable to roam (despite trying signals from several carriers) - no service at all. So now I am back with AT&T. To those who are switching to T-Mo I have only one warning: You get what you pay for. T-Mo will save you money, but it may not be worth the price if you travel frequently and need reliable service outside your home area, or if you get frustrated with slow internet/data speeds. I am not a fan of AT&T's duopoly pricing and gouging for international texts/data/voice but has never failed to deliver in my travels to 4 continents from the California mountains to the Niger delta. Additional note: With free calling via Facetime (or Viper) and free high speed data via most hotel wifi (and starbucks) my bill for international use is usually quite reasonable. |
The stupid thing about AT&T is that I'd pay them some reasonable amount, say $30-50 per month for overseas data that I currently pay to T-Mobile UK, Blau, Telecom Italia Mobile, Etc. but they prefer to continue grossly overcharging for data so that I'm forced to have a SIM for every country I visit.
