Usually Rogers. Occasionally it would jump on Telus.

If you switch to TMobile, do you have to do it at a dedicated store, or can you do it at Best Buy or something?

I am doing some extensive travelling in the next few months. What happens if I get the plan and use it for 3 months then cancel? Can I later sign up again or does T-Mobile have some kind of system to prevent that.

You are not on contract if it is BYOD. Right now you can sign up and then cancel.

They will probably adopt something like 3 UK has which requires you to have paid for at least one month of prior service before getting this rate.

Hi Folks--
Forgive me if this has been covered. Just back from Shenzhen and Hong Kong.

On the $50 Tmobile plan ($70 with the taxes), I used my Google Nexus phone extensively for two weeks in China. Worked fine-- better than previous China Mobile sims. The ultimate bill for the month was around US100. Such a deal!

I will drop the plan now -- until next trip -- and go back to the pay as u go plan, because the phone is only for travel.

I think there is an initiation fee when you start a new plan, which makes changes more costly. Only regrets? I had a very sweet number-- hate to lose it!

Was the Shenzhen coverage 2G via China Mobile?

Could you swap the phone line to a data only plan? Simple Choice 500 MB monthly tablet plan does offer international data and sms.

I recently got back from a 10 day trip in Israel. Let me just tell you that the coverage was perfect! I roamed onto the Orange nextwork as soon as I landed. I received a text from tmobile saying welcome to Israel and that unlimited text and data was included in my plan and $0.20 for calls. Now the data was on a 3G network throttled to 2G speeds, but the speed was perfect for Facebook, Twitter, and web browsing. The speed was also fast enough for the Vonage Mobile app. So if you want to make free calls to the US while overseas I recommend using the Vonage Mobile app. I was also able to do tethering which I thought you couldn't so that was cool.

I also use T-Mobile phone only for travelling. So, currently it is on Pay-as-You-Go plan. Is my understanding correct, that in order to be able to use unlimited data roaming I just need switch to one of the Simple Choice plans before leaving for a trip?

Once I return I want to switch back to the Pay-as-You-Go plan. Are there any limitations to that? I mean, does it say anywhere in T&C how many "switches" between plans I could do in a month/year? And if I stay on a Simple Choice plan less than a months (say, two weeks) will I be paying for two weeks or for a month?

Another issue is tethering. T&C explicitly prohibit it. However, I've read people using a number of programs (TetherMe, PDAnet, MyWi, iTether) to circumvent that limitation. Was anybody here able to tether while abroad?

Thank you in advance.

You can switch from PAYG->Simple Choice, but you'd need a new SIM.

http://support.t-mobile.com/message/317334#317334

No mention of limitations or # of times you can switch (though I expect you'd have to get a new SIM every time you did this)

Changing to a Simple Choice plan that has roaming access will require a credit check. I don't know what sort of impact that has on your credit score.

Also, you need to use it in the US first, and need to have some % of use in US or it could get cut off.

http://www.t-mobile.com/optional-ser...l-service.html

Not for extended international use; you must reside in the U.S. and primary usage must occur on our U.S. network. Device must register on our U.S. network before international use. Service may be terminated or restricted for excessive roaming or misuse.

I didn't see where T-Mobile states a credit check is required to change from a pay as you go plan to an int'l simple choice plan just for a month. Can you pinpoint that?

I believe any carrier signing up new post paid customer does a credit check...it's just standard procedure. If you don't 'pass', they usually ask you to provide credit card and prepay the preceding month's usage upfront. TMO used to call that 'easy pay' :)

It is not a simple yes/no. The results of attempting to tether will be vary widely, based on what type of phone (branded or unbranded) and whether you have done the update to Android 4.2.2 (kit cat). T-mobile has increased ability to track tethering in version 4.2.2, even in unbranded phones. Whether this tracking will take place while roaming might depend on other factors. And there are workarounds on rooted phones.

A Google search for T-Mobile and tethering and 4.2.2 will probably give more complete information.

Bottom line is that if you have not updated to version 4.2.2 then you might not want to update if you want to tether.

This puts a dent in our getting the simple choice int'l plan. I don't want to have a ding on my credit rating.

Would they do a credit check for current customers already on a pay as you go plan who wants to do the simple choice int'l plan as well as for someone who isn't a T-Mobile customer who just wants to use the Simple Choice Int'l plan for a month?

mrcamp Jan 27, 2014 12:02 pm

If they do it for new customers, then they will do it for customers on payg, since in this case, a payg customer is not currently a contract customer, that has already gone through the credit check.

That's a deal breaker. Since we plan to buy an apartment within maybe a year, we cannot afford to have our credit rating harmed by a credit check for just an 8 day trip.
