I could not get the data service to work in Ireland when I registered on the 3.ie network although voice and text seemed ok. Switching to O2 did the trick though and I got mobile data for the rest of the trip.

Two more data points, with Moto G:

Brief layover at CKS taiwan, checked with home for storm update via skype call. Emails too. Dont recall carrier but screen read E and got full bars.

Now in Hong Kong for wkend, skype, wechat, line, whatsapp all work, along with emails. Homescreen shows 3G full bars but skype connection at airport not very clear. Line call to Mrs. while on airportexpress was also spotty, better when i got to island.

Update- TMO free data on Moto g more reliable than smart tone 3G/lte on my iPhone 5s (vz CDMA model). Skype and Line drop on 5s but solid with G. Not sure if hardware or bandwidth.....

Second update - tethering with moto G on TMO n/a, whereas with using post paid 3g on 5s is fine....typing update on ipad tethering off 5s. Strange???

In Taiwan try Chunghua - Taiwan Mobile works also but is flaky to do initial registration when connecting. FarEasTone is not supported.

On VZ 5S I recall coworkers reporting same on verizon accounts. Roaming was slow - wondering if firmware isn't HSPAP and is basic HSPDA

I have an unlocked Verizon iPhone 5s. I will be going to Europe for a month. Can I sign up for the Simple Choice plan and then cancel it after a month?

Letitride3c Mar 7, 2014 10:57 pm

Yes, you can. T-Mo's Simple Choice plan has no contract. Select the BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) option & order the correct (nano, if I'm not mistaken - not iPhone user, sorry) Sim card. Online, I believe it's free including UPS ground shipping (2-4 days) - prices in retail store might vary or not free (max @ $10 but you might get it free.) Since your plan is to drop it after end of Euro trip, I suggest getting a new number to use temporary instead of porting your VZW mobile # over (as risk ETF with Big Red, unless you are out of contract - unlikely, right)

Check to make sure that you can edit & save new/different APN settings under T-Mo, device should be unlocked for oversea usage but might still be blocked for domestic out-of-network use on AT&T and T-Mo USA.

On Android devices, we have a workaround on tethering block but beware that overseas, your speed will be lowered & some reporting on 2G/Edge speed and not necessary 3G/HSPA, depending on country & partner carrier's coverage/band availability, etc.

Good luck & have fun, enjoy.

Simple Choice plan Update:
http://www.tmonews.com/2014/03/50-si...datatethering/
+ Free international texting from USA** to all but the Maldives, St. Helena, and Wallis and Futuna
+ 115 countries -> 122 countries free data roaming (TBA, includes Afghanistan)
Takes effect April 1

+ Domestic plans are also updated - $50 Base plan now comes with 1GB data.
$70/month users should hit up link for details on whether to opt into the new $80 plan starting March 23

** Press release states "T-Mobile is the only US wireless carrier to deliver unlimited international texting to virtually anywhere - now from the United States and over 120 countries and destinations around the world - at no extra charge" though the graph shows "Stateside International Texting" so will need some clarification

Props to jspira for posting it first http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/trave...l-texting.html I just happened to come across it googling for some Simple Choice countries

Just be aware that there may be a hard credit pull for new postpaid subscribers

Interesting things happening overseas, too:
If you'll be going through Germany, Aldi Mobile just updated their prepaid roaming EU data package to 120 MB/7 days for 4.99 EUR
http://www.prepaidgsm.net/forum/showthread.php?t=8438
Aldi has prepaid LTE on band 3 (covered by Verizon 5s) as it is on E-Plus network
http://www.prepaidgsm.net/forum/showthread.php?t=8448
Their country list does differ from TMobile's and interestingly covers Martinique and Guadeloupe in the Caribbean.

Three UK also updated their Three like home last year to include roaming for USA, Austria, Australia, Denmark, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Italy, Macau, the Republic of Ireland, Sri Lanka and Sweden.

I've come to add my data points to this. Would it be possible to add a link to this thread Wiki where people may comment on usage in specific locations? Or an idea similar to this?

In Japan, I used the plan without issue in Narita, Ikebukuro, Omotesando, Yokohama, Ueno, and all parts in between.

However, in Guangzhou, I had 3g in the airport, EDGE coverage 2 stops away from the airport and none in Guangzhou itself. I was primarily located near the East Railway station but spent a fair amount of time near Zhujiang new town. Although I considered using China mobile, I was spooked as my welcome text from T-mo only mentioned China Unicom so I used WiFi for the most part while there.

These may have been mentioned in other posts but a search revealed nothing and I don't care enough to read 26 pages of posts for someone else with the same experiences.

Forgot to post my international roaming experience here. About 3 weeks ago, was in Detroit for the weekend and decided to drive over into Windsor, Ontario to hit some of the hockey stores. As I was talking to Canadian Border Control agent, received the text message saying "Welcome to Canada". Phone registered on Rogers showing 3G.

Speeds were very good. Faster than I remember AT&T 3G being about 2 years ago. There was only 1 time it slipped into Edge and Siri struggled. Otherwise used multiple apps, Siri, iMessage, maps, Facebook, Twitter with no problems.

Interestingly, I did receive a call from a friend in the USA while at dinner. We talked for about 10 minutes. Bill came last week, no charge for the call. The length did show on the bill, but charge showed 0. I'm on iPhone 5s. Data also showed no charge for just shy of 100mb (which it should have been free anyway). Wondering why the call was free?

I got a call from the US while I was in India and got charged roaming at 0.60/minute. Shouldn't it be 0.20/min?

mrcamp Mar 12, 2014 3:34 pm

Have you checked the website to verify the rate for India? If it's listed as $0.20/min, you may want to contact them.

Yes it is. Wonder if that rate if for using your US cell to call other India numbers.

Assuming you're on a Simple Choice Plan, it should be $0.20/minute. Perhaps you were on a different roaming partner? T-Mobile's website is advertising Bharti and Idea.

How does one select only these two? Another strange thing is these charges appeared two months later.

It may take weeks for the Indian carrier to send the bill to T-Mobile. I think there is a little blurb on T-Mobile's website stating that roaming charges may take up to three billing cycles for it to appear

How is one supposed to chose a network?
