I noticed I was getting high speed in both Spain and Germany this week. Seems T-Mobile did another quiet lift of throttling. I wonder if they are testing doing this full time?

However, in the USA I'd say T-Mobile is better. Weird that since Google Fi uses T-Mobile and/or Sprint
- whichever is better depending on your locale. But in actuality it doesn't work as advertised. Here's what I mean. If I am on T-mobile via Google Fi - then Google Fi wins. Speeds are fast and exactly what I got from T-Mobile. If that was all - it'd be clear Google Fi is a winner. But sometimes where there is no T-Mobile it switches to Sprint. That works... but if/when Sprint gets one or no bars... the phone tries desperately to hang onto Sprint. Even if T-Mo now has more bars. So I have to force switch it back. Once I do that the phone is good again. It might seem like an easy thing to do - but you don't realize this is why the phone isn't working until a few minutes of frustration wondering why things are not downloading. So the seamless switching doesn't work properly. Weirdly I'd almost prefer to force keep the phone on T-mobile and I'll tell it when to switch. I used the phone in Miami, Vegas and Los Angeles. I'd say Domestically T-mobile wins... slightly. Since I travel Internationally A LOT, Google Fi is a clear winner for me. If you are Stateside a lot - then I'd say stick with T-Mo. use dialer codes to force-jump on aspecific carrier. generally i'm on the "prefer no signal and hunt for great (LTE) signal, over some signal but very slow data" camp (if you're using project fi SIM on a non-nexus phone, you can only access tmobile only) anyways, Iceland: Nova (LTE on reykjavik, 3G/LTe/no-signal mostly elsewhere) Siminn 3G only, couldn't force LTE vodafone, couldn't connect will update wiki when i feel like it :) |

Huh, didn't know this was an option. Could one use a Fi SIM in an iPhone and essentially have T-Mobile service in the US with the benefit of Fi's superior global roaming speeds when traveling?

I've sort of switched back and forth between Android and IOS over the years. Used a Nexus 5 as my main phone until I notice the used iPhone 5 I bought for app testing got signals when the Nexus didn't (both T-Mobile) so I switched to an iPhone 6. Dropped the Nexus 5 once too often and decided to give Google Fi a try with a Nexus 5X -- especially interested in the improved data as I was spending 3 weeks in England on a bike tour.
Well, then T-Mo does the "Endless Summer" thing and and Fi stays home. Have another 3 week trip coming up and go figure, free LTE again :) Fi will probably come with me this time as I'll be in Belgium for awhile and they aren't in the T-Mo deal. But if T-Mo keeps this up I'll be thinking about dropping Fi -- and the German Fonic SIM I keep alive for Germany. |
I have T mo on an ipad mini and google fi. both work well in the US and abroad. If you are using a Nexus phone with Fi I would suggest getting the Signal Spy app to help you optimize your connection.

Not sure if the deal is still being offered, but T-Mobile was giving out two free extra lines to people on certain plans last week.
I took them, and I'll use one on my iPad. I had it on the 200 MB free plan, but with this, I'll get the same allotment as on my other phones, plus I'll get international roaming for it. |

Made the jump from At&t to T-Mobile last week an absolutely love it. Was visiting family in upstate New York, did a day trip to Canada and was the only one with a phone. Was so excited I felt like I found water on the moon.

The wife and I just switched to Tmobile. It's bittersweet not having our parents pay for the plans but with all of the travel we do the international data and text will be awesome.

Ordered 6s on cyber monday, order is still processing up to now

Just got back from Germany and enjoyed wonderful LTE speeds over there - saving me from getting a local SIM for my iPad. The only thing I did was tell the phone to select T-Mobile (Germany) as the carrier (rather than "Automatic") to get it to lock onto LTE. Other carriers (O2 and E-Plus) would only connect at the 3G level (still faster than the normal 64kbps). Thanks for the early Christmas present, TMo!

Just ordered my Pixel with Fi and the extra Fi sim. Will report back after Christmas when I start playing with it.

Does anyone know with Google Fi - if you choose the minimum package - $20 per month plus 1Gb for $10, and then don't use any data in a month, do you still pay $10 per month for data or do you get a refund on the $10? They say you only pay for the data you use.

Any TMO US roamers in the UK right now
There next week but hearing reports of both EE and Three NOT roaming on LTE any longer (only roaming on HSPA) - anyone report anything who is there now? (if so please state location in the UK and if you are getting LTE or 3G/HSPA)
Reports of only O2 and Three working right now - updating Wiki to reflect |
