KnowRoaming SIM sticker

CNET reports that you can buy a KnowRoaming sticker for $35 which attaches to your SIM card and download the iOS or Android app that goes with it and roam abroad for much cheaper than your current carrier, without the hassle of buying a new SIM card. Only works if your phone is unlocked.

They have deals apparently with numerous carriers. Sounds like a great alternative to now, having to hold multiple SIM cards. Also gives the option of buying a local number so people can also call you.

The perk is that people can still call you on your US-based number while you also have the option of purchasing a local number so locals can call you. The $85 outlay ($35 plus $50 top-up minimum) is still pretty expensive. I imagine this would really benefit those who travel internationally to a multitude of countries on multiple continents.

Even with that hefty top-up, credit doesn't expire, which is really nice.

But the KnowRoaming site says you can't; you can pre-order a sticker for shipment in February 2014. Hopefully they'll come through.

No rates on the site and I downloaded the app, but it won't let you explore without registering, which requires a SIM serial.

I'll wait until it's publicly available.

I would be curious to see how this would affect apps like WhatsApp, since it relies on the phone's phone number for the account information.

It seems to allow passthrough. It doesn't change your phone number unless you purchase a local number and you can still receive calls on your native number while using the app.

Shouldn't matter. WhatsApp only relies on the number for the initial setup. Already, you can swap SIM cards in your phone and your WhatsApp account remains unchanged

Awesome. I'm curious to see how receiving calls on your normal number works. Do you forward your number, or do they have some voodoo black magic they are using?

I presume that normally you pay roaming on calls to your local number and it passes it through. They may, however, provide you with a local number which you can call forward your number to.

In Singapore they've had a similar sticker for some time with one of their carriers. I've never used it, but that would be where I'd look to try and figure things out.

The rates are the big issue in my mind. The other question is how will they sort out text messages. Will Apple approve this app, or will it require a jailbreak? Obviously they think Apple will approve it.

The rate calculator is up on their website. Seems like similar rates as seen with other roaming providers, but their system is what interests me. I'd still prefer Toggle Mobile, if they can get their kinks worked out, and expand a bit.

Quite a bit, whereas most major countries get free inbound calls, UK has 9c/min incoming, US has 30c/min, Japan is 22c/min.

I'm considering canceling my pledge after seeing their rates.

The US always charges for incoming calls (unless on an unlimited plan)
