What IS checked on the bottom of the general tap in Safari preferences is "Open safe files after downloading. 'Safe' files include movies, pictures, sounds, PDF and text documents, and disk images and other archives."

I'm confused. Why should this be unchecked?

Because what appears to be a safe file could be a maliciously crafted unsafe file (malware), that just APPEARS to be safe. Your best practice is to uncheck that option so that NOTHING gets opened automatically.

Picked up a 13" i5 for about 15% off RRP just this evening. Its been a long-ish week (and if I turn it on now, I suspect I'll be up for another few hours just playing with it) and I'll play with it tomorrow.

1. I don't plan to install Windows for at least a week.
2. Will give iWork a run for a while before I decide if I want to continue with it or switch to MS Office for Mac.
3. I'm using gmail (and more recently, set up google apps that I intend to transition into). If Mail.App supports labels (or if its new iteration within Lion supports it), I'll stick to Mail.App; might also try out the
4. Definitely installing Chrome instead of running Safari.

Thanks all for the help so far and I'll be sure to post more tomorrow morning.

mail.app will definitely support labels - as folders, but it has to be setup correctly. Not only does it need to be setup as IMAP but there are some very other very crucial settings on the google site, and on the mac which need to be set properly in order to get it to function correctly as a syncing mail client.

do a bit of research FIRST before setting it up on the mail.app client. I'll do a search in my bookmarks for the proper settings

I'll make sure to read up on that before I start setting it up. If you can find the links in your bookmarks, that'd be swell.

In the meanwhile, how does mail.app transpose labels to folders when an email has two labels attached to it?

this one looks okay,

http://www.macworld.com/article/1578...#lsrc.rss_main

hits on the key points to focus on.

and this one goes into a bit more detail,

http://www.macobserver.com/tmo/answe...and_mail.app1/

as for multiple labels, I think it will put the same message in multiple folders on the imap side so there could be some duplicity in that regards

There is a reason why Apple itself recommends anti-virus software.

It really isn't necessary to post the same news article for the same news story on the same news day.

actually, they did get it wrong. those articles were about an old tech note, which apple removed the very next day:

http://news.cnet.com/8301-1009_3-10111958-83.html
Apple removed an old item from its support site late Tuesday that urged Mac customers to use multiple antivirus utilities and now says the Mac is safe "out of the box."

"We have removed the KnowledgeBase article because it was old and inaccurate," Apple spokesperson Bill Evans said.
the article goes on to say that there aren't any viruses on a mac and anti-virus software is not required:
There are no known viruses in the wild that exploit a vulnerability in the Mac OS, and Windows continues to be the overwhelming preference for malware writers to target their programs. But malware isn't just taking advantage of operating system weaknesses anymore. In fact, the majority of such threats now come from code that targets weaknesses in browsers and other applications that aren't platform specific.

Mogull said he doesn't recommend that the average Mac user install antivirus software because of the low-level of malicious software seen for Macs at this time.

apple already patched that and pushed the update. also, the malware only launches an installer, hoping the user will be tricked into completing the install process. without the user participating, it won't install.
