which Apple iPhone????

I am buying a iPad2 this weekend AND and it's time to upgrade my cell phone, too.

AT&T has the "old" 3GS available for only $49. For me, I mainly use the phone for calling and playing games. I'll have the iPad available if I really need to access the net.

The newer 4G phones are running $199 and $299 (16 and 32 gig). But I heard that when they came out, there were a lot of problems with the 4G phones, mainly the antenna.

So--is it OK to get the old 3G phone?
Have the problems with the 4G phone been corrected since released?
Is Apple going to release an iPhone5 anytime soon, so the prices on the current iPhone4 will drop?

What's the best advice?

Wait 2-3 months and get an iPhone 5g (June seems to be the release month) OR wait and get a 4g marked down to $99.
OR
Wait 14-15 months and get an iPhone 6g

The 3GS is a fine phone, but the 4 is better. Faster, nicer screen, etc, etc.

The antenna problems were way overblown.

Historically, Apple has announced new phones in June. No one outside of Apple knows for sure it that will be the case this year.

Are we sure the next update will be an iPhone 5 and not something along the lines of a 4...GS.?

The antenna "issue" was massively overblown, and later proven to be a non-event, with almost all phone susceptible to similar issues. I wouldn't worry about that in the least.

At this point, so close to the launch of the next generation, I would wait for the iPhone 5, or 4GS, whichever it is. If you can't wait then I would suggest the iPhone 4, as the older a phone gets the more likely it is to get left out of the next iOS upgrade.

The difference between the Iphone4 and 3Gs makes it worth it to go for the iphone4.

I don't agree that the antenna "issue" was overblown. I know quite a few people that work in Washington, DC that have had (and are still having) issue with their iphone 4 dropping calls when other models don't. Like anything else, if you ask enough people you will get the full spectrum of possible answers so, YMMV.

I am waiting for iphone 5g before I decide if I will get an apple device or an android device for my next phone. Or maybe I will wait another couple of years. I only use my phone for calling, I don't even send sms' that much so I am in no immediate need.

You shouldn't focus too much on the actual price of the phone. There may be $150 difference in the old and the new, but when you amortize that over 2 years it is actually pretty much the same price. If you look at it from a total cost of the contract perspective they are probably less than 10% difference in cost.

The price of your contract for a smart phone will be the same regardless of which phone you choose.

$150 is peanuts compared to $60 - $80+ per month x 24 months.

Wait for the iPhone 5 in just a few months, it fixes a lot of the things that Apple kinda goofed on with the iPhone 4.

Isn't it ironic. We all have different views and priorities for our money. I don;t mind spending my money on a Westin or W Hotel when I go on vacation, or even buying a C/F ticket, but the idea of spending $150 more for a phone just sticks in my craw.

Well said. $60 x times 24 months = almost $1,500. You just convinced to stick with my Motorola flip phone.

Agreeance. I'm holding off to see if it comes out in June. Rumours are that they'll be a 64GB which is now in my territory. 32 giggidy's wasn't quite enough!

I've been waiting since Jan2010 to upgrade but decided to skip the iPhone 4 due to lack of memory / reception issues.

Or you can buy an unlocked iphone and if you can live without a data plan, just go pre-paid and use wifi for data when you can.

the rumors point to a dual core A5 chip for the iPhone 5. That would future proof it for a couple of years (yeah, right ) I currently have the iPhone 3g, and it slows down with every iOS update. I think this is the year for my update,.

Exactly why I went with the 3GS. I saw a Youtube video of how long it took the 3G to start up from shutoff mode, versus how long it took the 3GS next to it. It was something like 40 seconds versus 17 seconds. I'm about to switch to Virgin Mobile from AT&T and save $80-85 per month with the almost-iPhone-like LG Optimus V. Maybe in a year or two I switch back, but gas prices are going to hurt me real soon.
