gps

Does anyone know where to get a gps with the maps loaded for Australia and New Zealand? We are thinking it would be helpful to bring one if we could find one that was not cost prohibitive.

Thanks

if you already have a Garmin or TomTom (probably others too) you can buy the maps for them ,

Sometimes pretty cheap on Ebay too ,

If you are staying somewhere in NZ or OZ you could also buy a GPS on Ebay and have it delivered to Hotel ETC

My garmin will not work with the mini SD card, so I can't load maps outside of the US and Europe. If you get a Garmin with options for mini SD cards for maps, make sure they work before you go.

AFAIK no GPSs sold outside Australia are loaded with Australian maps.

If you buy a 900 series TomTom Go here in Australia, it will have Australia + NZ, as well as the major world maps (USA, Canada, Europe) also loaded. So if you don't already have a GPS, maybe consider buying one when you arrive.

The alternative is to buy a TomTom or Garmin which has the facility to upload additional maps, which you can buy online. The TomTom Go 6XX, 7XX and 9XX are certainly up to scratch for this purpose.

As I mentioned in the 'GPS for Europe' thread:

Another option might be one of the new Nokia smart phones that comes loaded with free maps - for driving as well as walking - and free upgrades for life. You simply download the maps for your region of interest and go. I have it on my Nokia E71 (with all world maps loaded including Australia/NZ on its new 16 gb micro SDHC memory card - card was under $30) and its voice turn by turn navigation works without any internet or cell phone connection (no 3g, GSM, WiFi, etc.) - all that is required is that its internal GPS to see a satellite.

Regards, Bill

A little bit of thread pulling. Grappe I have the same phone and thougt it could only handle 8Gb cards. E72 can handle 16Gb though. Has there been a uppdate?

Ps. Saw on the Nokia forum that E71 sees some 16Gb cars and some not, even though the limit is 8Gb. So what type of card did you buy?

whats the cheapest Nokia that you can buy that will have GPS and accept the new maps ?

even an older model I can get on Ebay ?

I am sure that it would be better to carry a phone walking around than a GPS and longer battery life too

Taltos,

The 8 gb is old information that was provided when the E71 was first released as that was the largest microSDHC card available. The E71 processor can easily handle the 16 gb card that I have and was told that it could also do the new 32 gb. I went from an 8gb class 6 to a 16 gb class 10 and was amazed by the 'seat of the pants' speed improvement in the phone. Newegg had the 16 gb card on sale for $29 when I upgraded - mainly upgraded to be able to load all maps which works shockingly well.

Redondo - query the Nokia site or OVI maps and they will list the phones available for the free maps. The Nokia E71 is on sale in many places for reasonable prices considering it is, basically, a lap top PC for your pocket.

Regards and Happy New Year, Bill

There are three sizes for SD cards - SD, mini-SD and micro-SD. Both the mini and micro have adapters that make them fit a full size SD slot. If the map card is too small you can get the adapter. If you have a micro-SD slot and the map is on a regular SD I would think you could copy it to a micro (but have never tried).

I prefer using Ovi Maps on a touch screen device with a big screen - the Nokia 5800 is ideal for me.

The non-touch screen ones don't have access to the latest version of Ovi Maps, which I find excellent (the new beta even lets you download maps via wifi straight from the network, without having to load via the PC, wihch is awesome).

ETA: The latest version is available for the following.

Symbian^3: N8, E7, C7, C6-01
S60 5th Edition: N97, N97 mini, X6, C6-00, 5800XM, 5235 & 5230

Taltos,

You are most welcome! PM me for more Nokia info as I am very pleased with my Nokia E71 that I used last March on my RTW trip - it never failed me. You can see the first installments on my trip reports - SQ RTW with planes, trains, skis and grappa!

Regards, Bill

It wasn't a fit problem. The GPS simply wouldn't load the maps. I could get the card in the slot, but the unit simply froze.

one more Nokia question , does the phone part have to work ?

so if you had a Verizon phone that is not going to work in Europe since its not GSM , will the GPS work as long as I download maps before I leave or over WiFi ?

I do not mind bringing 2 "phones" with me if it will work....

thanks RB
