Help with depth of checked bags

I am having a platform bed made for our vacation condo. It is entirely customizable but I am having a tough time with dimensions. It is low profile and will hold a tempurpedic mattress (just the mattress, no box or foundation). We rent it out as a vacation rental so it would be good if there were enough clearance room for guests to shove suitcases underneath to get them out of the way but I don't want to spoil the look of it.

For context, the bed at my primary house has a clearance of 10" and the height from floor to top of the mattress is 23". I am going for the same type of look/size. My 4 wheeled Heys 21" spinner fits easily under it (9" depth). Most carry on's would fit under a 10" clearance I figure.

But my problem is with larger bags. I don't own a checked size bag and all of my friends have older ones, like those soft Samsonite ones. Nothing from this century. I have looked on various websites for depths but I just don't trust what the manufacturer says. I'm sure a lot of my guests check bags and it would be nice if they fit under.

Can any of you who own 26" or 28" spinners (I figure those are the most common these days, right?) get out a measuring tape and tell me the ACTUAL depth including wheels? Hard side and soft side types both welcome as I'm sure I will get both. Would they fit under a bed with 10" clearance? 11"? I don't really want to go any higher than that but will go to 11" if it will make the difference of a checked bag fitting or not.

Thanks for all the help. Much appreciated.

Edit: just noticed the typo in my title. Should be bags, not bahs. Oops, hopefully a mod will notice and fix it for me.

My 31" (78 cm including wheels and handle) big bag won't fit it needs a 13" (33 cm) clearance to store flat on the floor. Some Rimovas require a 15" (38 cm) clearance to fit under the bed. Regarding carry on's some carry on's in the duffel form factor require a 12" (30.5 cm) clearance to fit easily!

If you make it 13" clearance the vast majority of bags will fit under there!

But for maximum convenience I recommend you invest in one of these luggage racks: http://www.overstock.com/Home-Garden...8,512&recidx=0

Makes it easy for the guests to reach their stuff without having to bend down all the way to the floor!

Thanks so much for the help! I do have that exact luggage rack for easy unpacking, but the idea is to have someplace out of the way to store suitcases after they're unpacked and for the duration of their stay. Most of our guests (and us) stay for a minimum of 2-3 weeks and many for 2-3 months at a time. I just thought it would be a good thing to be able to shove suitcases under the bed so they weren't taking up valuable closet or floor space. The luggage rack hangs on a hook in the closet when it's not in use.

Seems so far like 13" is the starting point for now.

13" sounds like a good plan... ^

Since you seems service minded and are concerned about good things for your guests. I have another suggestion for you. Sometimes during vacation it is a very nice thing to have breakfast in bed and for that something like this would be awesome: https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com...2fc26722da.jpg

Almost no hotels have these rolling bed tables, I have only stayed at one place that did and it is extremely convenient and I wished more places had these!^

These are also usable when one like to use the computer in bed!

So if you are building a bed why not also build one of these to go with it?^

What a great idea. Thanks! I've seen these at Ikea but particle board doesn't go well with Hawaii's climate. Solid wood is the only way. And I am very service minded. We bought our place 4 years ago and I tried to think of everything I liked and appreciated as a guest. We are at a place now where no one who stays at our place can come up with anything that they needed or would like to have had. But this is a great idea that no one (including me) had thought of. And it looks pretty darn easy too.
